Let's do some quick background info here - I am a great fan of anime, and have a LARGE volume of Fansubbed anime on my systems here. I will frequently toss friends an ep here, and ep there that they need, it's cool, after all, they toss me good stuff too.

And then I get this lovely request from a friend of mine ... who, incidentally, has never contributed ANYTHING (worthwhile) to my fansub pool ...

"Can you transfer me a few eps of fansub?"
"Sure, what did you need?"
"The first 34 episodes of _____."
"That's ... 5.7 gigabytes of data."
"Oh, we're both on cablemodem, that should go fairly fast. Maybe an hour or two, tops?"

... right. I'm one of 6 computers sharing a DSL line. I'm NOT going to do that to my fellow users here in the house. She KNOWS that.

*shakes head* And it was impossible to explain to her why what she was asking for was impossible, especially when it takes me an hour or three to send a SINGLE damn ep of fansub somewhere ... -_-

I mean, hell, it would be FASTER for her to drive the two hours over here, snag the eps off of my network directly, do some shopping in the local malls, have dinner, and go back HOME than to have me throw this stuff to her. Of course, that's 'not workable'.

It's like my friend who emailed me to ask what I thought of lost... then followed it up with "How many dvd's will I need to send you to get copies of it?"

Mmm. This person knows where I live. She's gotten things by the direct method several times now. She actually USES my hardware to do data backups when systems of hers are acting up.

... and the reason she needs these eps is because she deleted them AFTER getting them directly from my network right here. Her laptop has a burner, why she didn't think to burn them to disc is still beyond me.


In your friend's defense, he DID offer to send the blank media. I mean, points for that. This girl can't even be bothered to make the trip. No investment on her part. ^_^

i had a couple users at one of the places I work for emailing documents to each other. 20 meg documents. From one desk in the quality office to another desk in the quality office.

When the building was connected to the mail server by a 56k point to point link...

I started buying people cd burners after that.

Oddly enough, due to an incident involving a large frozen readymeal, a blunt knife, and a dead hard drive I found out that HDD's make rather good hammers, and it's quite satisfying too...
Alas, I'm no longer in the trenches so I shan't be able to explore the possibilies with an (ab)user, but it's something I'll bear in mind if I ever go back...
