With any modem involving a "standby" button... and people call in and say "The only light that's lit on my modem is 'standby' and I can't get online... is there an outage, or what's wrong?"

Like seriously... how fucking stupid do you have to be to not be able to put two and two together for that. It's like seeing a sign on a door saying "Push to open" and the person is asking his friends on his cellphone "Hey guys... it says 'push to open'... what am I supposed to do here?"

Seriously... Standby. Try pushing the button that says the exact same thing. Same with the on/off button. If the lights are off... try pushing "on". It's like a light switch, or are these people unfamiliar with those?

It's because people have no clue what the hell standby means, because they don't read the manual, and/or the installer does not tell them dick.

Personally, I am in the vast majority that agree that a standby mode on a peice of network gear is extremely stupid...

If you ask most people, they probably think "stand by" means "wait for something".

Precisely what I'd think ...

A light that says "Stand by" would, in my mind, mean that it has just been reset and is attempting to acquire a network connection ... and that it should only last a few seconds.

I also noticed with an SB5100 (my aunt has one - I was living with her for a while) that same problem. The SB button is quite well hidden, especially when totally unfamiliar with -any- cable modem (I'm used to my DSL modem, god bless it) and told to "fix it".

AMEN

I get at least 3 calls a night where the modem is in standby. Either that, or ALL the lights are off... and they never thought to check the power supply.

Hey, I've talked to that guy!

*filling out a form*

"It says name, what do I put for that?"
"Uh, your name?"
"It says location, what do I put for that?"
"Um, your location?"
"It says badge number, what do I put for that?"
"YOUR BADGE NUMBER?"
