So on most of the email addresses we provide, we have server-side "spam
blocking" that can be customized via the customer web
interface.

Admittedly, it's basic and shitty. If the customer was already
receiving ass loads of spam prior to using the spam blocker, it's pretty much
worthless.

We get calls all the time (housewives mostly) about
the amount of spam they are receiving that is pornographic in
nature.

"why are we getting these? Nobody here would *EVER* go to
those sites!"

soooo... taking them into their Temp
Internet Files and showing them the cookies, pics, websites and such that have
been visited... Is that bad?

I have a 45 minute escalated call
where a husband and wife had me on speaker phone absolutely irate about the spam
they were receiving. I was mostly talking to the wife, but her husband kept
making snide little comments in the background about how I was wrong, how the
system sucks, etc etc.

When I finally had had enough, I took her into
the Temp files and showed her what was there. Absolute silence from the
husband.

Wife: "I don't know why these things are there, *cheating
housewives* *married and flirting* *Discreet fucking* etc. it's only the two of
us that live here"

Do the math lady.

i get all kinds of complaints at work about spam.. even though i have spam assassin installed on every account, people complain about the words in the subject line, after the **SPAM** tag.

but either way, the spammers just hit every possible account.. i get over 3,000 attempts a day to non-existent accounts

I should've used that one!

I had a woman who said her account was hacked or had identity theft and that a porn agency had her credit card information.

She went on to tell me that her credit card was used along with her email address. She exclaimed "I even have the IP address of the person doing it!"

Great! Thinking that someone off our service may have stolen the information,I asked for the IP address to put it into arin.net.

It came up with our server.

So I asked her to go to "myipaddress.com"

"Could you please read the IP address to me..."

SAME ONE!

"ma'am so what you are saying is that someone using YOUR email address and your credit card with this IP signed up for a porn account..."

"yes."

"Who else lives in the house?"

"Me and my husband."

"Whose email address is this?"

"Well my husband uses it mostly."

"Let me understand this, you are saying is that someone using YOUR email address and stole your credit card information signed up for a porn accunt under this IP address from your computer eventhough you are assigned this IP address..."

"Yes."

O.o

"You are going to have to work this out with the Bank and the porn company."

No matter how many times I repeated that all this information was coming from inside her house, she just couldn't grasp that her husband would be signing up for a porn account.

OMG I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at her house for that one. Great job!

I had to bite my tongue on a call.

"My 14 year old boy would never look at anything like that."

What, a teenage boy look at porn? Why, that never happens. *eyeroll*

I always love these. Reminds me of training a tech once that had this guy bawling his eyes out because he was so repentent that he had a porn addiction and wanted us to make it all go away, kept going on about how he'd found Jesus and didn't want this anymore. Reformatted his system, but I still feel sorry for the tech that had to hear that on his first day.

Second day, anything goes :).
