I have been told by my friend that he is giving up AOL I have a screen name under his "master" screen name and I am wondering how can I keep my screen name and pay for the AOL myself?
you can change the master screen name to yours (by going under the current one and changing it), and then change all the billing information too, ie: new credit card, checking account, new address (which I'm not sure they care about anyway) etc... I don't think it requires much help from AOL at all.. Then you can delete the old master screen name if he doesn't want or if you dont want to keep it.
Orrrr........ with further looking into this, on 9.0 anyway, you can "create a new account for a screen name" under the screen name options listed under settings.
Does AOL allow users to change master screen names now? Back in the day when I was a member, they didn't allow it. Also, it would require having the password to the master account. Best of luck.
they used to, I haven't changed one in years, so I'm not too sure about now. That's why I just looked at AOL and found the little new "create new account" button. So that might be even better. It offers like a bazillion free hours to start too... (get ya hooked on the aolcrack.)
Second off, for pete's sake, its the 21 century, get dsl or cable service, you'll be the better for it.
Third off, you're lucky you actually GOT help from these nice people, instead of jeering and nasty comments, as the majority of the techsupoort LJ people are trying to keep this an LJ where we can come to rant about the abnormally stupid people that we have to deal with on a daily basis, instead of it turning into a free Ask-A-Tech for the entire LJ world.
They are still in buissness because of the other ventures, oh, and also because of Time Warner as well.
They obviously aren't doing so well because they are in the process of pulling out of Broadband.
Maybe if they wouldn't send people so many coasters and spend that money on writing decent software and paying their techs decent wages and not require their customers to use their shitty software...
But I digress.
AOL is not crack... It might be cheep stem filled weed, but it is most deffinately not crack.
I wish there was a community that, you know, looked like a help community for complete lusers. But instead, it was just a bunch of disgruntled geeks who abused anyone who asked a question.
Ahh, yes well I think we get enough zingers now to do that don't we? We should just start compiling them anyway. Maybe someone has artistic talent and make a web comic out of it.
First step : Disconnect the phone cable from your computer. This will remove any need for you to have an AOL screen name at all for the time being. Second step : Go to your college, ask for remedial reading classes. You need them. Third step : Go to your college, ask for basic and intermediate computer courses. You need them. Fourth step : Go out, buy a chalkboard. Write the following 500 times daily : "Not everything is as labled, I will be careful to read the information regarding the community I am posting to before I post to it." Fifth step : At this point, you should be smart enough to rejoin the internet, and know better than to use AOL.
Optional sixth step : Take advanced computer courses on the third step, and you can do Tech Support work for your friends and family, make some money from it, then come back here with your funny stories of people who used to be JUST LIKE YOU.
By admitting that you use AOL you have admitted that you are the lowest form of 1user, and deserve no pitty. Go to a real ISP, or go fuck yourself, your choice.
Study him. Learn everything about him. When you have learned enough, kill him. Have plastic surgery to become him. Pay for his AOL account. Your screen name is now truly yours!
#1 : My girlfriend would likely show up to the wedding with some variety of sharp and shiny device of damage dealing - and would then object forcefully. ^_^;;
#2 : While we have tech stories and kittenbreak in common, that's where our similarities end. ^_^
Yes, well. One learns to speak plainly and simply when dealing with technical queries for which one is receiving inadequate or no compensation. Especially from people who use AOL, although in this case, the plaintiff seems to be about ready to graduate from AOL to Earthlink or somesuch ISP that doesn't require caps lock be used and the grammatical skills of a 13 year old on crack be employed to be understood - that's a nice bonus, as it meant I didn't have to talk too far down to get my point across.
That and I saw no reason to simply tell him to sod off, since he was not inherently rude about his request, and while it was in the form of a run-on sentence, there were no critical spelling errors, no gramatical errors otherwise, and no l33t. It also had correct puncutation and capitalization.
So I gave him the most helpful advice I could think to give in the most straightforward manner I could think to give it, in such a fashion as to permanently resolve the issues at hand (Give a man a fish ...). The fact that the advice is singularly insulting is merely a plus. ^_^
I get so many tech support calls about "having dialup problems" Jesus, get broadband. DSL in some places is only $14 more per month. I hate AOL questions with all my heart I swear...
