Answer the question already!
Mar. 7th, 2005 03:01 pmActual text of an email exchange between myself and one of my users, as he tries to get access to a folder.
Cast:
Me: Yours truly
User: Idjit who can't answer questions
Tech: Remote tech who helped to start this in the first place.
Tech: Please open a ticket for User. He needs the location of the CorporateDivision executive sales group network drive location.
Note, since I do security work, and would be doing this anyway, I attempted to clarify what they meant.
Me: Well, CorporateDivision could mean many many things.
I'm going to assume he means NewDivision, since he has access to a NewDivision group in his profile.
\\NewDivision\Private
That's the NewDivision T drive. He has access to the sales folder. I'm not sure if that's what's being talked about or not.
Without knowing precisely what he needs, there's no way any of us can say for certain. Is there someone else who has access to it that you can ask?
User: I'm actually looking for the Executive Sales Group network drive at CorporateLocation.
Me: It's likely on \\corporate somewhere then. I'm not sure where it would be, though. Is there someone else who has access to it?
User: (A few days later; I may have missed/ignored an email from him): Just checking to see if i have been granted permission yet or not?
Me: Did we ever determine exactly where this drive is located? I can't grant access without knowing where it is, and I'm not sure I was able to find it. (I'd also need a UAF on that, if you don't already have access to it.)
User: I was told it was under the Corporate and DivisionName was the Group if that helps..
Me: I really can't find it. I have to know exactly where it is. Can you contact someone who does access it and have them send you the link? That will help greatly with the user authority form and determining if you have access.
I don't see anything called Executive Sales looking under the DivisionName folder on the drive at CorporateLocation.
User: The secretary is telling me that Corporate Tech is the IT guy at the CorporateLocation office, I think that is who I was talking to.
Me: *forwards email to tech manager who is covering that location today* Help! I need a clue brick! Can you find someone who knows where this is?
Manager: Jeez! I'll try.
In related news, I think I missed the memo that was evidently released this week, telling people to just email their requests for network changes to the helpdesk rather than fill out our form so it's documented. I've been saying 'Fill out an authority form, it's located here....' all day.
