When a customer asks for your name again at the end of a call, I automatically think they're writing it down with the case number for later use in their fantasy lawsuit...could it be that they just want to thank me by name?

whenever that happens to me im always thinking "did i accidently say fuck? or call this person a moron..."
and then i go about asking my coworkers if i said anything i shouldnt have on the call...

so, yeah, youre paranoid.
but so am i, and with just cause.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

i always ask for a name to thank them by thier name. I never thought about the tech's paranoia 'til sometime last year when I started reading this community and [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck

But I always hung up the phone satisfied everytime i called tech support. I never yelled or talked down to a tech and amazingly they treated me with the same respect i gave them... unless they were de-souled and de-motivated drones, then it's a monotone conversation all the way through.

I went through a call with a customer, all pretty routine, though there was quite a bit out of kilter, strange settings and such - apart from the fact that the system was down, so we had no way of checking customer details we had to just write it down and type it up later. At the end of the call I ask if there's anything else I can help with as per the script, and the cust asks for my supervisor. I glance over and he's been listening, and OKs the transfer. So, through goes the cust... and then there's a £25 bonus in my next pay packet, as the cust was saying how good I was, first competent tech they'd spoken to. Poor sod had got through to eight trainees in a row and every one had made matters worse. No way I'd have been as calm as this guy was!

They don't want to sue you. They need your name for the voodoo doll.

you give your actual name?

That are probably taking it so that later they can call and lie about what you said while using your name.

Easily fixed. Just remember to say 'fuck' on every call.

My Dad always does that - just so that, when he next calls them, he can say "I spoke to..." (despite the fact that it's probably a hoooge callcenter where they don't all know each other!)

I never had a problem with providing people with my first name (always use it in the greeting anyway.. aka "this is Chris speaking..."), but i'd NEVER give out my last name.. not obligated to provide that information anyway

Well speaking as a person that works tech support AND has to call upper tech support with a certain "fruity" computer company on a regular basis, I can say that I take down who I spoke to for "CYA" purposes. On my call notes I put down the date, time and who I spoke to. Not to sue the tech, but to cover my own behind with MY boss. *wink*

Are these the same people who can't get your name right anyway?
