We recently installed a new HP Alphaserver DS15. It includes an external raid array and an internal SCSI DAT drive. The DAT drive has been a problem since we set it up and now it just won't work at all. The system is less than thirty days old so it's under warranty. I call HP to get someone to come out and check the drive and the person I get on the phone, who evidentally handles DAT drive calls all day, says "Wow, an Alphaserver, I didn't know they made those anymore!"

He works for HP, come on!

i was on hp's site looking for a dual opteron system yesterday(no luck!), and ran across the alphaservers.. for 2 million bucks you can get a hell of a nice 64-way alphaserver :D

seems odd no name-brand people sell dual opterons with a lot of disk storage.. back to clone boxes it is!

You'd probably get a similiar response if you called in for service on an HP 3000 (also called a E3000 now I believe) running MPE. Before HP decided to sign the EOL for MPE a few years ago, calling into HP and finding someone with the knowledge of one these systems was like pulling teeth.

Max...

You can get a v40z with 2 CPUs and 6 disks from sun. If you even went with the smaller v20z with only 2 disks you can still store up to 500GB with some big scsi disks.

ouuuuuuchh.

even without any disks in it, that's still way over the price of the clone box.. and then to put the 2 TB of (apparently scsi only) disks in it......

Whitebox clone it is :)

I totaly agree with you, way over priced. I was just replying to the "no name-brand people sell dual opterons with a lot of disk storage". They do, just damm expensive. I've got a clone at the office thats still in the box, no idea what it is, I'll have to open it Monday and maybe let ya know if I remember.
