Working in a Computer Science department, you'd expect people to be quite PC-savvy.

Of course you'd be wrong. One of our research students just asked this:
Could you please send me the address of the site I can dawnload some software programes from?

There's no hope.

Without further context, that seems to me to be a valid question. (albeit badly worded)

www.download.com ?

What makes this a stupid question?

I guess so yeah.. I really don't know what people study anyway.. Everything I know I learned from other people or by trying it myself.

I've downloaded thousands of files, but I never recall "dawnloading" anything.

Oh, you gotta watch out for those dawnloader people! I've heard that they do computer hacking with those software programs.

/snark

Yeah, in my experience I'll take a self-taught computer geek over a comp sci grad any day of the week. I mean, sure, maybe you know matrix theory, and can program a new float sort, and understand x86 assembler language, BUT, can you add a new user to the domain? No? Ok, do you understand how NTFS file permissions interact with share permissions? No? Hmm...can you at least install a new operating system with a custom HAL AND remember to get the updates for it when you're done?...Well then, you're just bloody useless from a practical standpoint, arncha?

Hence why the department I work for employs about a dozen history, art, and business majors, but only two CS majors.

The biggest computer guru in my department has no degree at all, and two of us (including me) that work for him have philosophy degrees.
