Alright I've recently accquired an old Toshiba laptop (94-96 era...) and when I boot the computer up, after 95 loads etc, it brings up an error message saying "windows networking: the following error occurred while loading the device VNETSUP Error 6107: Could not set up instance data" I turn my head and click "ok" and it gives me an error that concerns me a bit more. It says "Registry problem: Windows ecountered an error when backing up the system registry. Make sure you have enough space on the drive for three copies of the file "C:\windows\system.dat This error should not cause any loss of information, but if space is not made on the drive, you may experience additional problems. Please fix the problem and restart your computer" A little concerned at this point I hit "OK" again. Windows finishes booting normally. The clock is correct and the only desktop icon is "My Computer". I decide to work on the problem at hand, and I double click it. Nothing. I hit enter. Nothing. I right click start in order to get into "my computer" but no window pops up. I go into control panel, but not only do i get the error "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied" but i can't go anywhere else in the explorer without getting the "illegal op" error. At THIS point, I get the blue screen of death and am returned to the desktop. Exploring the start bar, I find that all the icons are missing and everything has .ink at the end of it.. I'm a mite confused... can someone help me?

I would suggest reformatting your drive and reinstalling your OS. Don't think anythign else will cure this. Sorry.

Well first at the shortcuts .ink or .lnk
.lnk is the proper file extension for shortcuts in the startmenu and quicklaunch area

Next VNETSETUP: was this an old corperate laptop?
Cause between the icons, the restrictions and the startup error, I am kinda wondering if the laptop was part of an NT4 domain. If it is, boot off safemode and go into the registry with a copy of poledit (found on the windows 95 cd). If it was part of an NT4 domain and you don't connect it to that domain anymore .. it maybe best just to do a clean install :)

unfortunately, i seem to lack this magical cd of win 95ness...

it WAS an old corporate laptop (best place to gets em ^.^ sometimes companies will just give em away for free and they work fine and have tons o stuff on it!)

dammit! damn you jared! thats what i was afraid of. i dont have the stupid cd, and i have no money and im trying to get frikkin emancipated and can i nooo because i have to have a car and i need my drivers lisence which i cant get without drivers ed (because im under 18 so i cant just go take the damn test) and i need to do 3 classes of my choice before i can take drivers ed and all of the classes available to me require papers that are TYPED not written and i cant go to the libareeeeee because le fee has no car and i cannot use this comp anymore because i have to live entirely "independantly" of my legal gaurdians and this computer which worked FINE when i got it was in the possession of joanna for a short period of time AND NOW IM SCREWED! -implodes-

Does it have enough juice for 98? If not Kazaa 95. They don't sell 95 anymore, so your best bet is a friend that has 95, or kazza it or ebay it. I Think that if it will run it, to put 98 on, because it is 98.

You may wanna call toshiba then. Sometimes, depending on the model they allow two HD image cd's per laptop. If you tell them you got if from a company but they didn't supply you with the original installation image, they may send you out a copy of the toshiba standard harddrive for that model.

Ask your local geek; they will either have a copy around or know where to get one.

Failing that, as someone else has already said, Ebay is your friend :)

You could try entering safe mode (press F8 when it says 'Starting Windows 95...'), try doing a scandisk as well as a virus scan (Mcaffee and Norton AV both have 30 day trials on their software)...
sounds unusual, it also sounds like for some reason the drive is write protected and/or files are damaged... Scandisk may be able to give you more information on this.

It's not much, but if you're waiting for someone/some cd to help you with a reinstall; it might be something to do.

-pets- i know. and now it thinks im doing something with BIOS and the drive isn't even attached and.. -rolls her eyes- looks like im gonna have to roll up my sleeves and when i'm done the only original thing about this computer will be the plastic shell..
