Check out this program. Skype.

Free telephony using p2p rather than VoIP.

No malware.

I like it.

Kind of resource-hungry. And made by Sharman. Isn't it bundled with Kazaa now?

I'm a fan of FWD.

Sharman is the company that makes Kazaa. Those bastards.

I use (or did, before I got a cell phone) Free World Dialup (http://www.freeworlddialup.com/). It's nice because it lets you call POTS numbers for free (or did, the last time I used it). Not sure if it works internationally, but it was good for domestic calls I made here in the US.

it's an OK program (we looked at it for work) but it's free calling to other skype users (which is about ten people) and overall it's sort of blah. but it does have a version for every major OS, which is nice.

First off, it is indeed VoIP. Anything used to make voice calls over the internet is VoIP.

Second, I'd be very wary of the License terms. This is from the same guys who brought you the massively spyware infested Kazaa. While the Beta's of Skype are Spyware free, I'm hesitant to expect that it will remain that way, and knowing their rep, it likely won't even tell you when it does install some spyware.

I'll stick to the occasional voice chat over iChat AV or MSN.

On the first note, anything that does Voice over IP is VoIP, not just H.323 or SIP applications. VoIP is a generic term for such applications, as is P2P. Skype is a P2P based VoIP app, as opposed to the normal Gateway based VoIP implementations. Different implementation, still VoIP.

Chalk it up to a thorough sickness at people taking Marketing at face value.

Skype works. I'm in Sweden and my Girlfriend is in Virginia stateside.

Have been talking on skype for over a year. used to do netmeeting before that but skype kicks netmeetings behind 6 ways till sunday.

Only ever problem I've had was when I've tried to use it on dialup but I think that comes from the 120 mb compaq laptop I used it on.

If you've got broadband it works like a charm.

The program is made by the people that made Kazaa, BUT it does not contain any spyware/malware. That was included in kazaa to generate revenue. Skype however is free. BUT you can sign upp with them and use them to dial regular phones over the net for a small fee , just like a phone but you dial out localy thus avoiding longdistance callfees.

So far It's really a good software for me.
