Dec. 14th, 2004 08:00 pmSo I got the usual kind of call, a faculty member (preemptive facepalm!) with a fairly ordinary problem - Got nice new Dell and a nice new stack of CD-Rs, and wants to know how use the CD burner to make a CD in windows XP. So, I go through the basic deal but guess what? It won't work, because he finally mentions that in My Computer, the only CD drive that appears is called a DVD-ROM drive. And it is, in fact, the only CD drive physically installed on his computer. What do you know? But wait! There's more! It got even stupider.
Professor: So, I don't have the one that will make CDs for me. Gosh, I really needed to put some files on a CD for this project, you see, oh gosh mumble disgruntled mumble...
Me: No, sir, I'm afraid that all you can do with this is watch movies. You'll need to purchase and install a CD-R or CD-RW drive from an electronics store, in order to be able to make a CD.
Professor: Well, I guess I could get something like that. What do you think I should get?
Me: Well, we aren't really allowed to suggest certain brands for individual hardware, and I'm not to familiar with prices, if you stop into a store like Best Buy the associates there can help you decide on--
Professor: *interrupts* Eh, DVDs usually aren't too expensive, I'm not too worried.
Me: I'm sorry? DVDs? You'll need to get a CEE DEE ARR drive, not a DVD drive. You've already got one.
Professor: YES, I KNOW! Now what good movies are out that I should get???
Urgh. Crossposted to customers_suck.
