help, please
Oct. 29th, 2002 09:13 pmI'm not a computer genious, but it would be really nice if one of you could help me out, since Gateway (I know, bad computer company I've heard) can't seem to help me out since I didn't buy the computer from them. (Another mistake.)
Ok, so I have a Gateway PC with Windows ME on it. Earlier today, my mouse was not working AT ALL. I THINK I have fixed this problem. The main problem is that I shut down my computer earlier today and when I got back, I turned it on to find that it was in safe mode, only I never clicked on anything for it to go into safe mode, but the appearance makes me think that that is the problem. Some things are in black and white, some are in color. The icons on my desktop are large (appearing to fall off the screen. In other words, when I open something that normally would be in the middle of the screen, all I see is the rim of the top of the window, the rest being off the screen entirely becuase it is too large) I didn't click in "Display" for them to be large. I have restarted my computer a number of times and consulted friends and professionals and the same problem continues. Can you help?? Thanks.

Date: 2002-10-29 07:02 pm (UTC)Does Windows tell you it is in safe mode when it boots??
If not - then you are not in safe mode then it is a matter of resetting your display properties, or reinstalling your display drivers. Try the restore feature built into Windows, or Goback if you still have that installed in your Gateway.

Date: 2002-10-29 07:14 pm (UTC)no, it never said it was loading into safe mode, i am just assuming that is the problem because things just appear more rough than usual. like the black and white along with the color, some things being clear, others blurry.
so with restalling the display drivers, where do i go in my computer to do so?? Thanks.
mmm windows ME
Date: 2002-10-29 07:25 pm (UTC)first suggestion I would have is to get a new OS.. (I'm partial to 2k, but XP is nice too) Microsoft as far as i'm aware has stopped supporting ME actually, but they still support 98... that should be a big hint as to how stable ME is..
a more immediate suggestion... when the machine starts to boot up, before it begins to load windows, hold down F8 (It might be F11, i cant remember off the top of my head)
Holding down F8 will/should eventually bring up a small selection screen that will allow you to boot into normal mode. From there you will need to restart your computer through the start menu, and it should boot normally. Once it comes up normally, I tend to restart again just so everything is undoubtedly back to normal and you have a clean restart.
I saw this happen with someone on the phone the other week, same OS... and this fixed the problem.
It may or may not fix your machine, but it's something easy to try..
Good luck! :)

Date: 2002-10-29 08:31 pm (UTC)when i go into Display under the Control Panel, i go to the Settings tab to change the amount of color (16 color, etc.) as well as the size of things on the screen. When I choose a different option and say "Apply" it says it will reboot with the updated information. So I do that, and return to that exact tab to see if it really did it, and it didnt!! So, that may be the problem, but why isn't it saving the option so this problem can be resolved?? :(

Date: 2002-10-29 09:12 pm (UTC)(Device manager is right click my computer > properties > device manager tab. Look for unknown devices as well.)
Hope that works!
Re: mmm windows ME
Date: 2002-10-29 10:20 pm (UTC)However having said that, any tech worth his salt doesn't *like* ME and the majority of those working with computers on a regular basis would wish it would drop off the earth.
Having said that, it's still windows and should still work eventually somehow :)

Date: 2002-10-29 10:24 pm (UTC)Making my best techy guess on that, I'd say check for conflicts between your Network Card (if broadband/LAN Internet) or modem and anything else...
Safe mode should always say SAFE MODE somewhere on the screen. Display Drivers do occasionally get wrecked (sometimes with game installations for DirectX reasons... but this is a minority).
Other than that, become good friends with ME's device manager and make sure all the devices are functionning properly and more importantly, are listed as what they should be.

Date: 2002-10-30 01:09 am (UTC)check your adapter address.
I bet that the adaptor adress is not the same set of numbers that is the hardware address listed. Try doing a release then a renew (not all..) If you don't get a new ip address and you are on broadband shut down your pc then unplug the power from your cable modem for a few moments then plug it back in then reboot your pc, hopefully you will then try to pull a new ip. If not, then contact your isp and have then release yoru ip in thier tools. if you are on dial up it should be as simple as just disconecting and reconnecting your connection.
The error you are getting is the ip that is stored in you computer is being used by another computer in your connection, sounds like someone has that ip hard coded in thier pc I bet if I try to ftp or http it I can connect. They are probably running a server of some sort.

Someone else on the network has the ipadress of 149.31.84.41.
The Hardware address of there network card is 00:50:da:9b:1c:01
which means that they have a 3Com network card.
fyi..
Date: 2002-10-30 08:59 am (UTC)if you holding it down to get a menu to come up, it's ok.. just annoying..
