Whenever a client orders web hosting from us, they receive a detailed email containing all their FTP information -- basically everything they'll need to upload their webpages to the space. It's laid out nice and simple, so even idiots can understand it. Or so we thought.

A client has just emailed, in respose to the instructions (which he has oh-so-helpfully left below the body of his email), and asked, "How do I upload files?"

*facedesks*

The FTP instructions include the line: Make sure that all your html code goes into the public_html directory. Having re-explained the instructions to the client, he now asks, "Does it matter what file/folder I store them all under?"

Waaah. *facedesks*

you can lead a horse to the water but you can't make them read the email.

What is even more frightening is that these people are writing web content.

I got stuck helping someone with Frontpage today. We don't support Frontpage. Noone in my office has ever seen Frontpage. But because it broke at about the same time as I moved her site onto another server, it became my problem. :/ So, trying to get through all those settings, translating the microsoftese into what it's actually doing, trying to turn off the "mangle my html beyond recognition" option... Her site was primarily two frames named homepage.htm and website.htm... One was supposed to be a nav bar, but she was hiding all the html stuff she didn't want to lose underneath the other page... With terminology like that, it was nigh-impossible to get anything explained, plus I think she may have had some sort of disorder that makes it difficult to record new memories...

Thing is, I don't even *do* support anymore. I wasn't even supposed to work today. I just came in cause I felt like coding, and ended up on the phone for two hours. The other guy apparently had talked to her for just as long, and took the rest of the day off as soon as I took over the call.

If you can barely operate Windows, what makes ye think ye can code a webpage?
