This actually came out on the 11th.  Sorry I missed it.

Gmail to be accessible via Outlook

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- Web search leader Google Inc. said on Wednesday it will soon make it possible for users of its free Gmail service to check their e-mail via Microsoft Outlook or on certain handheld devices such as mobile phones.

Freakin' awesome.  One more thing my BlackBerry can do now!

Wow, that *is* pretty cool. I'd prefer IMAP, though--but you can't have everything....

In spite of the many "privacy scares" in the gmail realm, I still love it to death. Google is fucking taking over the world.

Would be great to have it work with Thunderbird.

Doesn't Thunderbird support POP access? I'd be very, very surprised if it didn't.

Quoting the article,
Google said it is adding POP, or post office protocol, access to Gmail for all users over the next couple of weeks. The move will enable Gmail users to download a copy of their messages through other e-mail programs, such as Outlook and Eudora, and devices that support POP.

They just mentioned Outlook because it's so popular. It'll work with any program that supports post office protocol.

Thunderbird does in fact support pop. This is a fine example of someone not RTFA :)

Sadly, you are correct.
*le sigh*

Rather than read the damned thing well myself, I relied on the comments of the person before me. d'oh!!!

I deserve what I get.

:)

(In other news, though, w00t for them having pop support!)

Does Opera still come with a built-in email client? If so, you could access Gmail via Opera Mail!
