Oh how I despise theee

This isn't really a tech support rant, it is in a way but not technically I'm sure. Anyhow, a few weeks ago, someone in our office asked me (informally) if I knew of a way to do ( in the interest of keeping this somewhat vague, we'll call it TASK X).

I went back and forth about TASK X several times with (we'll call this person  dumbass Z) and advised dumbass Z to look into Program A because it had that feature somewhere, I just wasn't sure how it worked (of course we ARE supposed to know EVERYTHING about every program out there). I left it at that since after all, it was more of an informal request with no official ticket per se.

So yesterday dumbass Z brings up the topic to dumbass Z's group in a meeting about TASK X and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about it...since we (IT) could not figure it out.

Very professional to say the least...aside from that, don't you think we're a little too busy to fuck around with assanine requests that are just inquiries and not a formal request.
I now officially hate dumbass Z more than any other person prior to this. I gave dumbass Z one more chance after a previous incident not unlike this but dumbass Z fucked it up for good this time.

Rot in hell.

I know precisely how you feel. Behaviour like that, internal and external, is the reason I do everything writing and play the CYA game. I've turned into a freaking politician just so I can keep my job...

Oh yeah the "Don't you know how to do it?!?!?!" crap that people give when they're dealing with obscure programs that we've never heard of.

I've said on a few occasions "I can set the program up and make it work as it's supposed to however I have no experience in this program, the tech support line for the vendor is available off of their website. Here let me look it up for you" In cases where they've been trying to do something really advanced in a more mainstream program I've suggested that they just ask the company for a book that explains it.

Heh. I know of this one only too well.

Absolutely wonderful game to play. Takes me a minute to 'forget' to play it outside of the workplace environment.

*sigh* yes, I do the same thing. It tends to frustrate my fire chief when I carefully sidestep questions and don't give definite answers...

I tend to answer questions with "Maybe" and 'I'll have to get back to you on this'. I've learned to always, always talk in possiblities rather than definitives, especially about computer-related or system-related topics. Easier, safer, better all around.

Works very well in tech support and computers, not so well on a fire scene... :-)
