User emailed a support issue:

Hi, we are having a problem with our printer. It squeeks sometimes, it is coming and going. I think it needs lubrication. Please advise

So I wrote back:

If you tie your printer up, or keep it in a confined fenced area, it won't be able to come and go. If you would like a technician to come perform maintance on your printer, please provide the following:
(Ask typical hw information, asset # type, printer name, location in office, etc.)

Now, should I delete that first sentence in my reply to the user, or not? Hmm.....

Yes.

Otherwise, you'll have to explain to a very confused hardware tech why the printer was found wrapped up in packing twine or left outside with a chain-link fence around it.

Lusers never listen, except when you're being blatantly flippant, in which case they take you literally.

I once told a user they were having network problems because bit would get stuck if there were kinks in the ethernet cable. They straigtened all of them.

Another time I sent a pop-up notice to users (on April 1st, mind you) notifying them that we would be vaccuming out computers through the network. I requested all users put a piece of scotch tape over any unused ports to prevent sucking in dirt.

They took me seriously. I nearly got called on the carpet for that one.

I've done it in the past. riotous laughter ensued from the other techs when the read the case notes.

Personally, I'd say something about how if they performed enough foreplay on the printer, it wouldn't NEED lubrication, but I'm a sick bastard.

I'm with fnordx here, that's totally where my mind went first.

My mind went along those lines, too.

I'd delete it. It would just be too much for many people to understand. It's funny how people shelve their funny bones once they step through their work's glass doors.

Not only that, but you know the old adage about "If you have to explain it, it's no longer funny."? I think it applies here.

We got it, they probably wouldn't. Then you'd have had to face 30 minutes of blank stares trying to explain.
