Dude,

I grew up in New England. I lived in the great state of New York for four years. I used to be a disk jockey.

If I say you're speaking too quickly, then you're speaking too quickly, so slow the *&^%$#@! down.

and that doesn't mean put pauses in between saying things too quickly either, you asshole.

People get frustrated when I say "what?" more than once. I can hear just fine - I have to take a hearing test every year for my fire department job - but if you can't slow down and enunciate, then no one will understand you.

I've reached the point of interrupting people midstream after the second "what?" and saying, "Stop. Slow down. Now, what were you saying?" Usually that'll get their attention.

Speaking (hah!) as someone who *does* talk fast, this isn't as easy as you think. I don't talk fast through choice, it's just something I do naturally - I really can't help it. I know people often have problems understanding me, and I do try to slow down, but it's really not as simple as that.

Maybe it's not the customer who's being an asshole - at least not deliberately.

I talk quickly, too. I get a lot of 'Are you native to Texas?' questions, which is then met by disbelief when I say yes, and that no, my parents are from Georgia and Texas, not up north.

My explanation is I just think faster than I talk :)

That's a great way of putting it :) Perfectly accurate for me, too. I also find I think faster than I type, which can be fun at times :)

Heh, I think faster than I talk as well, but unfortunately, instead of coming out really fast, the words just come out totally garbled instead. I much prefer being able to type things... :)
