routine pc replacement. i call ahead and tell the user i'm replacing his pc with a new one.

when i get to the guy's desk i see that him and a coworker are busy deleting files.

"anything important saved on the hard drive?" i ask. (we re-image the old drive after a week, but also recommend everything gets saved to a network drive in the first place)

"nope.. just delete the myfiles directory ok?"

sure thing.. i copy profile information over and browse through the drive for any important files (because there's always _something_ and sometimes people don't know which is their hard drive or a network drive)

i get to the myfiles directory and notice there's files in it. so by habit i copy the directory over to a network drive.

should have just deleted it.. i see numerous file names pass by... boobs.jpg... titsblahblah.jpg etc... it takes a full 10 minutes for the directory to copy, meanwhile the user is sitting right there while i'm pretending not to notice what is happening and making small talk.

i don't understand how people can surf for porn in public places.. especially the workplace. and then he saved i don't know how much on the pc itself.. sheesh.

We had a consultant turn in her laptop for an upgrade once and she had files littered all over the desktop... jokes and flash programs and PORN. Right on the freaking desktop. It's bad enough to do that on your work computer, but sheesh... at least hide it! :)

Heh, where I work, the administrator downloads porn to his comp. Everyone seems to try and I've decided to start putting up lockouts on some of the sites. It's so easy, I mean just 127.0.0.1 DNS in the hosts file afterall. Since i'm so sick of having to clean these comps.

I have tried a lot of that software and got massive complaints as I am an MIS/IT director in a nursing home. The prob is that a lot of the online forms that we deal with the state and federal have buzz words like sex or intercourse and other such words. So having a system that checks for words becomes nearly impossible. In fact one site I was screamed out about why couldn't they access was describing what to do when a resident is constantly jerking off and cums in different places. Yes, we have such a resident. So it's easier for me just to block sites and since I don't have a proxy set up yet I do it through the hosts file.

Just FYI

Sometimes you can get around software that uses "words" to block by inputing the "IP address" of the site you would like
to see in the open web folder dialog box.

another reason why I like using the hosts file, input the addy and the comp can never go to the site. Useful for blocking ads and ppl from adult sites.
