How is that bad? Come on..

Hello, welcome to ***, my name is ***, could I start with your email address please. Thanks, you can't connect? Yeah, its not your computer, its on our end. Yeah, just try again in a few hours. Thanks, bye.

Anyone who gets irate can be referred to the terms and conditions which most likely state that the service is in no way guaranteed.

Our authentication server went down once, I loved it.. People say "What do you mean the server's gone down! I'm running a business here!"
"Well sir, that account is a home account, and you running a business with that account contravenes the Ts and Cs"

HANG UP ON THEM!!! NOW!!!

Nobody, but NOBODY puts a fucking tech on hold.

"But this same thing happened 2 weeks ago!"

I actually feel bad for them, because while the mailservers are down, there's nothing to catch their mail. It all gets bounced.

That's definitely worthy of hanging up instantly.. They are waiting for you, not the other way around..

that's what I did here. Our voicemailbox had about 12 slots for messages. I just made a bunch of different messages for most major situations. When they arose I'd immediatly change the message, hit "Send all calls to voicemail" and wait for them to tell me it was fixed.

I got a lot of hangups on the voicemail when I did that. :-)

Yup. Though you still throw in the odd person who didn't listen at all and leaves a message "I can't log on to UNIX I get a message that says it can't connect to the server"

And the stupid users "I can't connect to the server, I don't think it's related to our connection being down"

and the funny users who listen to the entire message and listen to the beep and let a long *sigh* go into a message.

A lot callers automatically assume the problem is on our end (when the screen stays black, one of the keys is stuck on their keyboard, smoke billows from their computer, etc), and start with their accusation the moment I'm done my greeting. They expect an immediate denial in response. For that reason, I get a perverse glee in replying with a "why, YES!" when we actually do have an issue.

Lucky bastards..

When our call logging/troubleshooting/documentation/system identification/every sodding thing we do program goes down, we still answer the phones. If we're lucky, we didn't lose the connection to the internet with it, and we can still google error messages =/

haha I WISH.

It would save me a lot of headaches if we did. But, sadly, my please for improved infrastructure go unheard.

You could be a tech for a wireless ISP that isn't even technically your job, KNOW the RADIUS server took a big shit, KNOW the customers are screaming off the hook about it, or will be within a few minutes, and KNOW the sysadmin hasn't been paid for whoknowshowlong and therefore has bailed.

Oh yeah, and he was the only one with root.

The response from manglement: "You can still get into the APs, right? Just turn RADIUS off."

As far as I know, that's where it was left. Want free wireless?
