I Should Have My Tech Card Revoked
Jul. 15th, 2004 05:41 pmI cannot, in all good conscience, go on making fun of inept users without admitting my own embarrassing call to tech support.
It goes like this: I do tech support for a community center, and they were working on consolidating their phone system a couple of weeks ago. They were having one of the board members do this. Well, he called SBC, told them we were moving from the second floor to the first floor, and SBC killed the phone lines in preparation for the move.
When the phone lines got hooked back up, we didn't have DSL access. For the entire building, since it's all run through our router upstairs. Some board members had tried calling SBC to see what the issue was, and we had even had a tech come out to look at it. She told me if it wasn't back on the next day to call SBC again, since it was all on SBC's end.
So I did, but it was probably one of the worst calls the guy got all day. I couldn't tell him anything. I didn't know what number the DSL was on (turned out to be some number I didn't even know we had) and I basically couldn't answer any of his questions. All I could tell him was that the router said "Waiting for DSL...". He put me on hold a couple of times, and the last time he forgot to mute his phone, so I heard him talking to his coworker about what an idiot I was. And I really felt like it too. The whole time I was thinking "This is going to go up on
techsupport, I just know it." It took all day, but we eventually got the DSL worked out and they finally turned it back on two days later.
So there you have it. I should really turn in my card, handbook, and badge. Or maybe I can just do penance?
