me: put the install cd in the drive. ok, now restart the computer. when the screen goes black hold fdown the "c" key" Keep on holding it until you see the words "preparing installation on your screen.

idiot: "um...ok." (a minute or so goes by) "I think something's wrong, there's a little apple on my screen and a wheel spinning like i'm booting up"

me: yeah, it's supposed to do that, the "preparigng installation should appear in about a minute. when it does, let go of the key."

idiot: "what do you want me to look for? I already let go of the key"

me: (rather slowly) "pre-par-ing in-stal-la-tion. ok, it might or might not boot to the cd now, we'll find out in a minute."

idiot: "ok, it says preparing installtion. is that good or bad?"

me: *blink* *twitch*

It could be worse. You could have been trying to get someone at that level to delete unix partitions. Without anything as helpful as Disk Utility/FDisk. Three and a half hours. I, however, am truly sick, because I miss those days.

Aww.

I just tell them to let go of the 'c' key once the Apple is on the screen, and just wait to see how they went...

that's why you ask for a few things:

their IP address
their regular user name and password
their root password

Port 22 is your friend

Most of our custs were on dialup, we had no external access apart from a few driver sites and MSDN, and in any case that cust had a failed red hat install his grandson had done. Got to LILO and no further.
