[identity profile] jahxon.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
Greetings.

In my foster home, one of the foster children was looking at porn sites. This is a bad thing. Is there a way to get Microsoft Internet Explorer to print or save to disk a list of all sites visited on a particular day?

Oh yes, the computer does not have access to a printer currenly, so I would have to make a text file, save it to disk, and print at another computer.

I need this list for documentation purposes. The alternative I am facing is to handwrite all these down, and I would rather not do that.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

AFAIK, nope.

What you cna do is to find a spare printer and attach to it. Go to History, pick the date and do a screenshot? Then you can print it off...

Or just paste the screenshot into Word or Paint. Then you have a file you can transfer to another computer to print.

Unless you do the print screen option as stated above there is not a way to do it without help. You should check out software like Netnanny (http://www.netnanny.com) which will block most of those sites amongst other "bad" sites and monitor where your children go.

If you have a browser like Netscape installed, you could navigate to IE's history folder through netscape, and print out the directory listing.

You can do what the other's have suggested but if the kid has any computer savvy they would be clearning out the history and such.

The best thing you can do is just go ahead and move the computer into an open area where you can help visually monitor what they are viewing on the net. Even the best software can be circumvented by a smart kid who thinks outside the box.

Also-- do you have seperate accounts for each of the users in the house? This can help narrow things down and provide a seperate history for each user to help document the one (or more) who is visiting these sites.

Also-- make sure it is absolutely clear that these are not acceptable 'net activities. You'd be suprised how they will come back with "But you never said I couldn't do that..." bs.

Good luck- and thank you for being a foster parent to begin with. It's a very thankless job.

pardon me for being a dick... but, shouldn't this go to "tech_support"? I don't want to rant and troubleshoot in the same forum. Besides, looking at porn is a normal healthy thing for growing boys. Also, if the kid is looking at porn, you're doing a shabby job at fostering or parenting. You should monitor the times allowed on the web. Parenting cannot be replaced with a shell script. Even though that would be pretty cool.

Generally, it is better to take a look at the community info before posting a question. You will notice that information for this community states that technical questions should be sent to [livejournal.com profile] tech_support. I'm glad you were able to solve your problem, but in the future, you may want to take a quick look for community guidelines before posting.

Give him a break. Regardless of whether he read the community info or not, considering the circumstances it's not a problem for people in the community to give it a shot.

Besides, he had a witty comeback to you, so he gets points for that.

1. I am a dick... so eat my ass.
2. Read the community info before posting. This is for techs to vent, not help you become computer literate.
3. Only 2 kinds of people have never looked at porn. Blind people and liars.
4. I'm pretty fucking sure the state has laws and guidelines specifying that you have obligations and responsibilities. So leave the machine unplugged when you're not around. I don't give you any special points for work for humanity. Secondly, I have really hard time taking criticism from some fucktard that doesn't know how to check a browser history. You have no right using a PC, and good luck trying to outsmart a 10 year old, who is obviously light-years ahead you technologically.

security options

there are many programs that will restrict users from accessing pornographic sites (ie net nanny), there are programs that will log keystrokes so that you will know everything users typed (they will run silently and can be set to open on start-up so no one will know they're being logged). you can set these programs to affect only selected users so that you will know what users are protected and what they are doing (or attempting to do) on the computer. I would suggest downloading spybot and installing that as well so that all adware from the computer is removed as some of it can be pornographic and it will just stop popups in general (the program is free and is available at www.download.com). I would also not allow the use of filesharing programs that do not allow adult filters to be enable and password protected, as a great deal of pornography can be downloaded from these. As for the other software, you can look at www.download.com or www.sourceforge.net for a few examples.

porn, schmorn.

_READ_ the community description before you go blindly posting. This is not a help-desk. This is the bar that the help-desk people go drinking in after a long day of dealing with people like this. I swear, we seriously need to consider maybe doing a little moderating. Like posting access =/ we've been getting a lot of this lately. You'd think they'd notice, looking at some of the previous posts, but apparently, the subjects of our previous posts don't know who they are..

I agree with the other posts you have already received - monitor & parent the children under your care to what grade & level you desire. It is part of being a parent - you review what telly shows they watch & books they read, yes? Technology is not a cure all to what you perceive as society's ills.

and it is not 'illegal' for them to view pr0n, at not in this state/country.
