Emergency help needed
May. 30th, 2004 02:34 amGreetings.
In my foster home, one of the foster children was looking at porn sites. This is a bad thing. Is there a way to get Microsoft Internet Explorer to print or save to disk a list of all sites visited on a particular day?
Oh yes, the computer does not have access to a printer currenly, so I would have to make a text file, save it to disk, and print at another computer.
I need this list for documentation purposes. The alternative I am facing is to handwrite all these down, and I would rather not do that.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Date: 2004-05-30 03:00 am (UTC)What you cna do is to find a spare printer and attach to it. Go to History, pick the date and do a screenshot? Then you can print it off...

Date: 2004-05-30 08:43 am (UTC)The best thing you can do is just go ahead and move the computer into an open area where you can help visually monitor what they are viewing on the net. Even the best software can be circumvented by a smart kid who thinks outside the box.
Also-- do you have seperate accounts for each of the users in the house? This can help narrow things down and provide a seperate history for each user to help document the one (or more) who is visiting these sites.
Also-- make sure it is absolutely clear that these are not acceptable 'net activities. You'd be suprised how they will come back with "But you never said I couldn't do that..." bs.
Good luck- and thank you for being a foster parent to begin with. It's a very thankless job.

Date: 2004-05-30 02:39 pm (UTC)Seperate accounts seems like a good idea. I'll suggest that to the other adults here.
As for making it clear what activities are acceptable... we installed that computer yesterday afternoon. The kids all had a contract to sign with explicit definitions at to what was acceptable and what was not....
and finally, we think of fostering as a divine calling... and when we see one of our kids become responsible members of society, we know we have made a difference.

Date: 2004-05-30 02:48 pm (UTC)2. The name of this community being techsupport led me to believe that it would be an appropriate place. The advice given was helpful.
3. It is illegal for "growing boys" to look at porn.
4. As for fostering or parenting styles, I do not need to defend my ability to monitor to someone who has not observed the work we do, or the monitoring actually done.

Date: 2004-05-30 09:33 pm (UTC)2. Read the community info before posting. This is for techs to vent, not help you become computer literate.
3. Only 2 kinds of people have never looked at porn. Blind people and liars.
4. I'm pretty fucking sure the state has laws and guidelines specifying that you have obligations and responsibilities. So leave the machine unplugged when you're not around. I don't give you any special points for work for humanity. Secondly, I have really hard time taking criticism from some fucktard that doesn't know how to check a browser history. You have no right using a PC, and good luck trying to outsmart a 10 year old, who is obviously light-years ahead you technologically.

Date: 2004-05-31 09:58 am (UTC)_READ_ the community description before you go blindly posting. This is not a help-desk. This is the bar that the help-desk people go drinking in after a long day of dealing with people like this. I swear, we seriously need to consider maybe doing a little moderating. Like posting access =/ we've been getting a lot of this lately. You'd think they'd notice, looking at some of the previous posts, but apparently, the subjects of our previous posts don't know who they are..
