Wednesday night I got a call from network support that they received an email from Covad that one of the users in my control area had a virus that was sending out spam mail, and if we didn't take care of it they were going to close his account. So I called the user so we could begin working on the problem. I had a lot of problems connecting to his pc. I was finally to a point where I was trying a last resort method, and if that didn't work he was going to have to overnight the laptop to me so I could fix in the office. He said "aren't you on vacation next week?" "Well, since you're going to be vacationing down here (Miami), why don't you come by one day and just fix the laptop so I don't have to be without it for a day". What!! I'm amazed that people would even ask me to do work on vacation. I'm spending my own money on airfare, hotel, etc...and then I'm asked to work, with no compensation? Pick up my airfare and I would think about it. Luckily, I was able to get the virus taken care of (couple of variations of Sasser, and W32.Gaobot).

Phew! I thought this was going to be an anti-Covad post. I was all set to defend them.

My g-d- company asks me to horn in on my vacation, days off, and sick days ALL THE TIME. In fact, since I refuse to allow them to count a day off if I worked 4 hours or more on it, I have something crazy like 160 combined hours of comp/vacation/sick time for the rest of the year. Of course I'll never actually get to take 4 weeks off, so it's just ridiculous.

Heh. I already ranted about Symantec/Norton in another thread. Yeah, the virus shut Norton down.

I remember back in the days of Mindspring we would stop by a users house if he was in town and fix his pc if we couldn't over the phone. Noone ever asked us to do that though, and if they had I think I would have hung up on them, let alone asking for me to do it on my vacation.

Why thank you. It's actually a great company to work for too if you aren't in a position of outsourcing.

heh
1. <3 the idea that end-users understand the concept of techs being "off-the-clock"
2. <3 the idea that symantec or norton does anything but say "YOU _MIGHT_ HAVE THIS WORM"
3. <3 the way certain worms just sit in msconfig and mock you ie - msblast.exe, avserve.exe, bridge.dll, etc

Would you want her to see you like this?
