Microsoft should, in great big red font, place on the page for Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer:

WARNING: Don't run this from an important server!
Scanning your domain may cause the scanner box to explode.

But no, that little bit of trivia is buried in the KB. I started a scan only to get paged a couple of minutes later about the file server vanishing from the network. Oddly enough, it works just fine on the print server, and these boxen are identical.

There is a $DEITY! I was gonna run that over the weekend! Now that I know, I'll throw together a simple low-end server to run it from.

Thanks for that!

you would think a good microsoft sysadmin would realize that they should run such Baseline Security Analyzer in the off hours, when there is minimal usage by LUsers.

Oh yea, what was I thinking.
