I've been getting really annoyed by customers who just won't try, recently. I'm sure some of them are doing it on purpose because they know we can remote in and do it for them and if they frustrate us enough they won't have to engage their brains. There was one last week which cheered me up a bit, though.
Cust: I suppose it's easy when you know how, innit, but this is all too technical for me, I mean, I'm a mechanic, anything goes wrong with a car I can sort it, but I only have to use this blooming thing once a year to do this, an' it's all greek to me. I don't need to know how to fix it, I just need to work it. I 'spose you're a bit lost when your car goes wrong, eh love?
Me: Yeah, it was misfiring something rotten last week and I replaced the plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm and points, replaced a couple of spade connectors that looked a bit gummed up and taped them over, got the meter out and checked the dwell, and it all looked OK and idled fine, but it was still misfiring as soon as I tried driving it. I asked my housemate to run me to machine mart for a timing light, and he said to let him have a look at it first. Five minutes later he showed me the vaccum had gone on the distributor. I felt like a right wally, I would never have thought to check that. I don't really understand how the advance retard and all that works.
Cust: ... Your Dad's a mechanic, then?
Me: Nah, doesn't even know how to check his oil, but you have to make a bit of effort to know the basics when you run a classic as your everyday car. Anyway, you said you've not got a "settings" menu at the top?
Cust: I, er, I've found it now.
