In a rare moment of enthusiasm this morning I picked up my phone when it rang before 9am, this proved a mistake when I spent the next couple of hours trying to talk a user through removing a virus in safe-mode (using scan/removal software) which they'd picked up by clicking on an unsolicited link via MSN.
Now then, virus infections aren't usually a 'problem' as such, more an annoyance and inconvenience. If the virus scanner doesn't kill the infection (and lets face it, they're just glorified notifiers most of the time anyway) and you can't remove it by hand, you can break out the XP disk and have at it for an hour or two before handing the user their PC back with a slap upside the proverbial...
...Until you factor in that the user works some 500 miles away in an office with no tech support =) Then you get the fun of telling them to break out the 'loaner' PC, have theirs shipped back to base and really teach them what its like to feel the pain of 500mhz. Bwa haw haw!
