Call I just got while nuking a customer's machine for an F&R:

$company, this is $name.
"Do you sell Windows XP installation CDs?"
Yes, ma'am, I have one left in stock. It's Windows XP Professional, and the price is $price, plus tax.
"$price, huh?"
That's correct.
"Well let me ask you this: Do y'all rent those discs out to people?"
You crazy lady. Are you fucking serious? Did you REALLY just ask me that? What makes you think I can rent out an installation disc that you'll only use once and then lose? Are you really THAT
No, ma'am, installation discs can't be rented due to licensing issues.
"Oh, well thanks anyway." -click-

LOLwhut?

Probably figured it was worth a shot. I mean, hey, she could have hit you on a bad day when you hated $company, Microsoft, everyone in range, and just didn't give a fig anymore, and said "Sure! Come on down, I'll hook ya up."

No harm in asking, right? ^_^

I sometimes fear that our enterprise-volume-license with Microsoft might be breeding this sort of ignorance regarding individual licenses. "I could always get Windows and Office from my old job! Why can't you do the same?"

Skeet shooting.

(I know XP isn't THAT bad, but I couldn't resist)

"What is this 'Torrent' bewitchery you speak of? Begone, minion of evil!"

I was going to suggest something, but this is better, probably. ^_^

Not that anyone here would condone suggesting one could torrent commercial software as a viable alternative to paying for it, fair and square.

*Clears throat and pointedly glances at the mods, the LJ powers that be, and anyone else who has control over the thread and the group's status* ^_^

Meh.

I did have one crazy user ask me at my last job how much I'd charge to install work's copy of office on her home system. My response of 'my yearly salary plus the cash to resolve the legal issues that will arise' kinda shut them up in a hurry. I did mention after that that said person could pick up a legit copy from the local fry's for about $100 helped a bit.

I don't doubt you... but, for the sake of plausible deniability (for yourself and for the mods of the list), it seemed a good idea to stick in that little disclaimer. ^_^

Wow, I kind of went off there. Sorry about that.

That's kinda what the group is about, isn't it? ^_^

I'm absolutely fine with educating users concerning legality issues... so long as I'm able to take the carrot-and-stick approach to the training.

Take from this what you like, but...

No it doesn't. Fuck you.
FWIW, That was not a MacOS dialog box linked. Apple can only work with what Windows gives it.

Totally agree with you regarding the Ubuntu zealots. There is no "best" OS in the universe either.
I'll have to admit that my closed-source computing experience has yet to let me down. At work, I enjoy my XP behind its firewall and corporate AV services. At home, I have enjoyed my 'just working' hardware with its integrated OS since the 7.1 version.

LOL @ "Spinning Frisbee of Hate" :-)

Hell yes.

I'm waiting for the fecal matter to hit the air movement device when we audit the number of 2K3 servers we've added in the 7 odd months since I moved up to network admin- them server licenses ain't cheap, even with the enterprise agreement we have...

Depends on the company... I know my mom was allowed to install on her computer at home anything that she was using at work, which included MS Office and McAfee. She worked for city hall, though, not a private company.

They probably had the "home use" option in their M$ agreement. The company I was working at did not.
