Customer (about 19) has a custom build his uncle (why is it always an uncle?) built for him "a few years ago." Vid card isn't getting power. Easy fix. There's more than average dust. It's missing slot covers. Drops a couple of inquisitive "What's that?" type questions I answered with "This is your hard drive," etc. Not bad, very basic and nicely stated questions.

And then:

"How do I go about building a server to host WoW games? And I want to make video games How do I do that?"

Come on kid, one step at a time, please.

OT: I can't remember if I've said this before, but that icon is brilliant and makes me cackle every time.

Visual puns for the win!

And then there are the programming job applicants who think the answer to any question involves "MVC" and "Hibernate".

"Ten grand in cash for the first, a doctorate in mathematics for the second."

Gods, We have a couple of those types (thought IT was hip n cool but can't troubleshoot) at work.

One of the last things I did as a lead support tech before I moved upstairs to the network admin position was practical troubleshooting training. I took a bunch of computers and generated various software and hardware faults with them (some creative, some really obscure) and let them figure out what was wrong with them.

They sucked at it, except for the handful of techs that I know to be competent with their jobs.

I find those types don't last long in tech jobs and move to middle/project management quick smart. It's almost as though those roles have their own ineptitude-seeking tractor beams.

"why is it always an uncle?"

Well, "uncles" tends to be the guys that due to an excessive amount of time in front or inside a computer, never gets the girls (except when said girl want a computer fixed) and therefore have no kids. Such uncles have the time and interest in building computers for the whole family, because since they are anyway going to do all the support, its nice to know it was build by a pro ;)

Why yes, I'm describing myself.
