ACL POLL

Do you pronounce the word ACL as an acronym (A.C.L) or do you read it as a word ("ackle").

Every time I speak with certain Tier 1 American providers I almost die when they refer to ACKLES.

Yea, some are that stupid. Sorry about my country yet again, World.

(Oh, and it's POLL, not POLE...)

I second this apology. FFS.

And that's not pronounced "fuffs."

In my own defense, whenever I say "Ackles," I am, in fact, referring to JENSEN Ackles.

I had to google ACL to find out it's tech usage. When I see ACL I think of the ligament.

"ACKLE" seems so awkward.

Well that's a new one. *sigh*

I'm not entirely surprised given the stupidity of most people in my country.

a.c.l. three letters, shouldn't be too hard. Just like SQL is SQL and not 'sickwell'

my worst cultural shock was when I found out that in South Africa they call floppies "stiffies"

There's a joke to be made here about the ACL for the pants of Ackles.

Actually... you are wrong. "Sequel" is the correct pronunciation.

The language was originally called SEQUEL... Structured English QUEry Language... and specifically intended to be spoken that way, but the name was changed due to its acronym having already been trademarked by an unrelated company.

Not at all. I hear it both ways, but at my company (and I'm in Norway), it's usually said "ACKLE".

I've been known to say it both ways (well, all three because some people don't even know what ACL means). If I think the person is very proficient I usually pronounce it "ACKLE". If they should know what it is, but probably don't use it much, I'll spell out the letters, and for novices it's "Access Control List".

Australian. A.C.L., although I could imagine someone saying "ackle" humorously.

Ha, agreed. I definitely was confused thinking about the knee ligament.

Theeeeeen I remembered access control list. And the answer is easily still EHH SEE ELL. :)

Like the above poster, I'm an American that uses A.C.L. and sequel. (UNIX geek too, fwiw.)

Stross uses it nigh-seriously in ACCELERANDO: "She's spending all her time with that Slug, no multiplicity access, privacy ackles locked right down. I could get jealous." This makes me think it might be something specific to one of the shops he worked at.
