Usually I enjoy hearing what people have to say when I have my headset muted and they think they're on hold. People can say some funny things.

But today, this luser I just had called me a retard because I pronounced her name incorrectly. I was tempted to unmute and ask her if she was aware that the call was being recorded.

Who was asking whom for help again? And for a simple task, no less?

I never talk when I've been put on hold. Methinks that's gonna have to change :) Wonder how much random shit I can come up with to babble...

It depends on the way the consultant puts you on hold.

Unless we're going to take a long time at my place of work, we usually just mute the headset, so if your consultant goes "hang on a second" and then you hear the line go dead, that's your chance.

If there's music, they probably can't hear you.

Once when I was on the helldesk, I put someone on hold because I wasn't clued up on the application she was having issues with (out of the 50 or so we support) and heard "I've got a right numpty here".
As I recall she had a lot of problems logging on for the next couple of weeks. It's almost as if someone was resetting her Windows password every morning. Strange.
