Note to self: Installing winXP w/spP2, and then updating to SP3 without first visiting windows update breaks windows update by leaving wups2.dll unregistered.

Stupid windows.

You didn't do all the regular security patches before going straight to SP3, I take it?

I mean, I would figure SP3 would take care of that, but this IS Microsoft...

you also need to update windows installer to 3.1 or else you cant do any installs in sp3.

I initially read this as "upgrade to Windows 3.1".

And I kind of agreed.

I've actually had a couple updates do that to me in the past. I want to say it happened both on XP, and on 2K. and neither case was while installing XP SP3.

I've done precisely that multiple times and what you describe never happened to me...

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
go get coffee
reboot (because there was likely a kernel upgrade in there somewhere)
sudo apt-get install wholepileofstuffthirtylineslong

I've always been amused by the filename for the Windows Update Service files: wups*.*

If you say it aloud, it sounds like, "Whoops!"

sudo apt-get install update-notifier synaptic

Fixed!

To someone well-versed in the use of emoticons, Windows XP looks like it should be pronounced 'Windows Blech'.
