so this older dude called me from brazil needing help connecting to a hotel's wireless network. i walk him through some testing and after about half an hour i determine our hardware / software is working just fine and he's just not getting an ip address. i tell him he should talk to someone at the hotel to see if they can help him, because there's not much i can do on my end.

i got this email an hour later:

Serra

There is nonone around to help

Do not worry I will drink beer instead

Cheers

This was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

Edit: some people use their phones for e-mail, unlike us poor kids at the help desk who can't afford that fancy shit.

/nods.

Hell, I've been known to *post* to LJ using my Sidekick.

Although I will cheerfully admit that my SK II ain't getting any younger, and I'm thinking of migrating to a crackberry or a palmOS based Treo, if Palm still makes any of them anymore...

Hmmm... Well, text messaging now is email. I *suppose* that makes sense...

I almost upgraded to a new Treo when my Verizon subscription rolled over a couple months ago, but then I realized I have like...one friend IRL, and said screw that.

You can put Outlook on your Palm or access pretty much any exchange server from a iPhone...so, e-mail, voila!

As a matter of general principle, I fail to acknowledge awful software suites when I'm not actively supporting them.

So... Outlook, who? :P

more often than not these days I'm looking out at the interblag from my Nokia E71. I'm posting from it now.

I wouldn't recommend anyone BUY one, though. QA appears to be a completely alien concept to Nokia these days.

Treo 755 is running PalmOS. I myself am looking into getting an HTC Touch Diamond - as a Windows Mobile device it can run FortiClient, which is valuable for me. Unfortunately, the only carrier here that has it wants NIS 59 ($16.5) for 100MB of data (monthly), with 1 agora (0.27 cents) for each kilobyte over limit ($2.86 per MB!). Fortunately there is another provider that does unlimited data for $36/month, and they're getting the Diamond soon, which is when I'll likely switch.
