Saying you are not computer literate is not going to cut it anymore. You need that computer to do your job. If you don't know how to do your job, go take a class.
yeah, that's like coming to work as a teacher and not knowing how to use a chalkboard. *headdesk* Then again, the way things are going... nobody expects anyone to know anything anymore - it's like somehow we're violating their a student's rights by telling them to go get a pen and paper before letting them into class. (sorry, am a college student and nobody ever shows up prepared anymore.)
So is your computer displayin text you can't read? No? How about pictures you can't identify? What? You can read? So you're not illiterate. That must just make you stupid. But you know you're in front of a computer and you have the ability to read, so let's skip stupid and call you incompetent.
Not only that, but we're violating their rights if we tell said students that they're just flat-out wrong. "I'm sorry, but my religion teaches that 2+2=5. You can't count my answer wrong!"
Honestly? I think that's how employers want it in most cases.
George Carlin said on "Life Is Worth Losing" that people in charge only want obedient workers; people just smart enough to operate the machines and do the paperwork, but just dumb enough to take the increasingly shitty hours, the shrinking wages and benefits, and the elimination of overtime. They're fine with people that don't know computers that well, because hey, if that's the case, they're not going to be doing anything they shouldn't be doing. Just teach them enough to get by, and keep their wages low.
"Knowing how to use this device is part of your job. If you are not trained to use it, see your manager or the appropriate training department. And my manager will be following up with your manager in a week's time to make sure you DID."
