Dear $Name,
Please give me a quote on a new, larger monitor. My current 22" monitor is full - please see attached pic.

Thanks

can't attach the pic due to sensitive data (patient names are visible all over this doc's screen), but he's got an icon for everything...every document he's ever written is on the desktop, as well as everything he's ever downloaded (some in triplicate). this doc has been told how to save to his network share...repeatedly...

Bump up his resolution and then he should be able to fit another couple months worth of icons...

Even for a doc, that's pretty pathetic.

Sounds like my room mate.
His desktop is FULL of icons. I seriously doubt he understands any kind of basic file management.

I had to look at my desktop and it's nearly 5 columns, mostly folders (because I have to have some organization) and that's nearly too much for me. The idea of filling a screen....

Give him a quote on a larger monitor, but make sure that it has the same native resolution as his old one.

Or, you could introduce him to the concept of folders.

Okay, I'm notorious for having a messy desktop, but at least I know I don't have to put shit there. wtf.

5 Columns? I've got 3 at work and that much only because it's been a while since I've cleaned my desktop. My home box has 1.

Documents/home directories are where my actual stuff goes. And those are organized.

LCD monitors generally run at max resolution by default these days. And a 22" is almost assuredly an LCD.

Professors do that too.

I've got one who hasn't figured out how to use a VCR in the classroom - he can get it to connect to the projector, but then he gets confused because there are no VCR controls on the projector control touchpad. Every time, he calls me at that point, and I tell him to push the play button on the VCR.

Interesting. Our standard screen resolution is set to 1024x768 for all our users, but I run 1280x1024 myself. I'm not a workstation tech, though, so I'm not all that fluent in this area.

I suppose he could also switch the user to the "small icon" setting if he wasn't already using it.

LCD's look like crap any anything other than native resolution, so you pretty much have to run them at native resolution (which is max resolution, since LCD's have a fixed resolution unlike most CRT's).

Small icons should work though.

It completely boggles my mind that anyone under the age of 40 can claim to have NO computer skills. What is with these people??!! I'm 50 and I've been doing this stuff since I was just out of college. You can't survive these days without knowing how to use a computer.

My SO works for a company with 2 guys (sons of the owners and therefore protected) who couldn't turn a computer on if their life depended on it. And they use Macs!! They both have lovely brand new shiny iMacs on their desks and don't have a clue how to read their own email.

Yes, the stupid burns.

I can be bribed. Chocolate has always worked well. Roses will also do nicely.
