Yes, all 8 characters of your user ID are significant. No, typing just some of them isn't enough to let the computer "know who you are". Yes, I'm sure. No, it wasn't working last week; the logs clearly show you were typing the whole thing last week. Yes, I'm sure about that, too.

Kill me.

Kill me.

A clearer thinking person would realize that killing *them* is a much more satisfactory solution to your problems.

This is like the people that want to update their credit card information and ask me if I need the whole number or just the last 4.

A clearer-thinking person would have gone back in time to his twelve year-old self and gone "Yeah, I know BASIC looks fun, but see that outside? That's sunlight. These are fast cars. That's a girl. See that keyboard? It's gonna cost you all that, AND YOUR SOUL."

After having users who actually didn't know they had to hit the space bar to separate their words, nothing will surprise me anymore. The depths of stupidity are endless.

Er, if this is a web-based authentication, just the first few characters MIGHT have been "working" for them last week...

"But it used to work!"

You would be surprised as to how many times we've gotten bug reports claiming that a new version of our software broke their program because of some change in behavior, and how many times I've told them "sorry, it's always worked this way". They swear up and down that their code no longer works because of a change we made. I tell them "put back the old program and if it really did work the way you say it did, show me and we'll fix it". I have yet to have anyone reply with anything other than "I could have sworn it used to work that way".

Okay then, potential kvetch withdrawn. But surely you can see why I'd have raised it, given no more information than I had. =)

I dunno man. All that geekery as a kid directly led to me being well-paid, well-respected, and pretty much able to dictate my day to day work environment. I don't think I'd trade that for more time spent riding bikes or whatever. If I had anything to say to my 12 year old self it would be more along the lines of "don't get overconfident, little dude - I'm way better than you are and you're gonna have to work it hard if you want to be better than me once you're my age."

I'd rather go back in time to my, say, 16 year old self and say, first: don't bother fighting the establishment in high school so hard, they aren't worth it! And second and somewhat more importantly: DON'T JOIN THE FUCKING NAVY, GO TO COLLEGE INSTEAD, YOU LITTLE DIPSHIT!
