One of my longer calls yesterday was with a woman who apparently thought that the software fairy comes while you sleep and burns free games on the CDRs of all good users.
That's right- she thought you could buy a pack of blank CDRs, insert them into the computer, and would suddenly be able to install any game or program your little heart desired off of them. I was unable to convince her otherwise, and I believe she is still mad at my company for her computer not working "correctly" when she attempts to install new software.
She also had some really creative views as to how reinstalling your OS works, but I think if I go into detail on those, my brain will cry again.

Bleagh. I've seen that one before, actually. "Why isn't my data here!?!?!?!"

With any luck, she'll lose her address book with your number in it.

We mad the mistake of assuming basic technical competence on the part of our new workstudy last month when we assigned a number of basic rebuilds. Apparently we needed to explicitly tell her to use that "Format" option and not just re-install XP on them.

Yeesh...then again, it's *partially* right, I suppose, if you install over the existing version, or do a repair-install as opposed to a clean install. But that has nothing with putting the info on the install disks. :-)

Is her kid a big warez d00d? 'Cos that's how I'm betting she got the idea that the software fairy burns free games on the CDRs of all good users.

We once had a warez kiddy intern who wore out the communal CD burner because he kept pirating so much stuff. Unfortunately his supervisor was so incompetent that instead of being fired, he came out of it with a pretty decent evaluation.

Are your calls recorded? Curiosity compels me to beg you to post any existing recording of this call.

I used to work for a government department where one of the blokes in IT was so stupid that he sent around training screenshots taken from his work PC - including his Windows taskbar which had several minimised copies of IE with "WAREZ!" showing quite clearly. Not only using his work PC for warez, but providing the evidence? A special kind of stupid.

I would make her get the label for the pack of blank CDRs out of the trash, point out the word BLANK and ask her to explain what that means. But then, I'm mean like that.
