You lose, now and forever, all right to claim that you once worked in IT when your laptop (sent in for keyboard replacement):

  • Has two toolbars installed, and another one attempting to install at boot;
  • Has IE7 installed (ist verboten sez corporate);
  • Has every crappy downloadable "game" imaginable installed;
  • Is running at a snail's pace due to "call-home" routines running in the background;
  • Has software for an EXTERNAL wireless card installed because you couldn't make the PRECONFIGURED AND CONFIRMED KNOWN GOOD onboard wireless work.

You also lose points for:
  • Emailing me four times neeping about your laptop's "performance" since you got it back;
  • Copying your boss and mine on the email trail;
  • Conveniently "forgetting" to include the document I sent back with the laptop detailing what I removed and why (fixed that for you on MY reply to all).
Maybe you used to do IT - maybe you didn't.  (My money's on DIDN'T.)  I didn't care then, I REALLY don't care now.

JUST.  SHUT.  UP.

A lot of people work in IT and don't have anything to do with configuring laptops. They are programmers, or operators, or project managers, or someone hired to schmooze the customers, or helpdesk who kick everything up to the people who actually know things.

but trying to backstab you with the higher ups ... not so good.

'worked in IT'? Choose:

* ex-idiot manager
* ex-software sales
* ex-cardboard box stacker
* ex-janitor for IT consulting firm
* played a lot of Space Invaders back in the day
* asked a friend to install AOL for him
* drank, like, three Jolt Colas that one time
* is mesmerised by the Windows bouncing logo screensaver

If you like Office 2007, you'll LOVE IE7!

Seriously, it won't work a lot the interfaces for stuff like my firewall, various report generators, etc. and the "It's more secure" is a joke. Customization? Joke!

I have a list...

It doesn't work with MicroSoft Exchange Web Mail. Does not render send, forward buttons. WTF?

Work is not supporting IE7 right now, as it breaks a lot of web apps, usually due to some kind of Java-script problem. This is fine for non-Windows users; they know when they request a Mac or Linux box, they'll just have to deal, but for our 13k of windows users, we're facing a thick brown creek.

'Course, management doesn't want to spend the $$$ to fix a bunch of 8 year old crappy sites either. Life is going to suck next spring, when the users are finally allowed Vista/IE 7.

we don't support or allow Vista or IE7 because our medical software doesn't cooperate with it.

neither does Groupwise *shudders*.

i have no idea if/when it'll happen, but i dread when we do finally support them.

A lot of people "worked in IT" in the late 90s. There were a lot of jobs, a lot of crappy dot coms, and not enough people that actually knew what they were doing. Some learned IT, others likely became the moron that you just had to deal with.

Random slightly on-topic rant, but one of the classes I'm taking for my degree has online coursework - and the site's only compatible with IE. Damnit.

Semi-correct support of web standards (more correct than IE6, at least)?

I'd RATHER have my web users using IE7 than IE6; I can write to the standards and it works in IE7, Firefox, Safari, and Opera, but I have to tweak stuff to get pages to display correctly in IE6.

I use Firefox on most of my machines, and Safari on my iBook.

It follows standards too closely and is too picky about broken HTML written for IE6. Thus many pages don't render "properly", but instead render the way they are written, because IE7 is not backwards compatible with IE6's bugs.

I had a luser that actually had a copy of her CIS bachelor's degree framed and hanging on the wall in her office - I used to laugh at that so hard since she didn't even have the sense to know the most basic things - like how to get her icons lined up or how to get her toolbar back to the bottom of the screen after accidentally dragging it to the right ...

Weeeeelllll, none of the things you're talking about are hardware ... ;)

Serious winner there. I hope a LART is heading in her direction for fscking with a corporate laptop to that extent. I suspect, like someone else downthread, that she was a warm body caught up with the dot-com boom.

Also, if your corporate av/standard suite doesn't have a spyware catcher ... ees time.

I would do this:

If he's going to railroad you like that, reply to all, and state "if you used to work in IT, I can see why you work in $DEPARTMENT now, because you were a bad IT tech...", and list the problems with his laptop.

Two can play this game.

Beats the hell out of me. I'm just desktop support. Does have me wondering why an MS browser would not work with an MS email server. Weird!

Yeah I know, who would ever want a browser that actually supports the HTML standards? Weirdos!

Firefox really isn't a good browser either, it just happens to be the lessor of two evils here. Firefox is still the same rotting piece of shit that Mozilla was. It just happens to have a fresh paint job.

This post brought to you be the letters E, I, K, L, N, and S.

Its probably running a version of exchange that hasn't been updated in a billenium because no one really knows how it works and no one wants to take the blame for breaking it by trying to update it.

Exchange blows.
