Dial tone?

Oh. The joy of VOIP support.

Gent calls in... He's their IT guy. Conversation goes as follows:

IT Guy: "You sent me this new modem and it doesnt deliver DSL. I got it because its supposed to take care of the phone."

Me: "Okay, thats your Telephone Adapter. You're supposed to have that plugged into the modem. It will not sync up with your dsl line on its own because it is not a modem."

IT Guy: "Okay fine, but I'm still not getting dial tone"

"Are you plugged into port 1 on the back of the TA?"

"hold on." clanging banging and clunking to be heard "Yeah. now I am."

"okay, so are you getting dial tone now?"

"No. Also when I try to dial out, I get this busy signal type sound" (it's the sound if you leave your phone off the hook too long)

"Okay, How are you dialing out if you have no dial tone?"

"I just punch in the numbers and hit 'talk'"

AH HA! "So, what happens when you just hit talk?"

"Oh. I have something that sorta sounds like dialtone"

"... That would be dialtone."

Then I tried having him plug in another phone to try to trouble shoot the calling out issue. He plugged in a powerbased multiline desk phone. It got no dial tone at all. Why? It's power supply wasnt plugged in.

Yeah. IT tech my ass.

My phone rocks. It lets me do either. It's smart enough to realize that if I hit "talk" *after* a whole buncha digits, that it needs to dial them because I've been taking too many hits from my cellular bong.

well, yes. But you know how kids these days are. you're lucky if they even know what a dialtone sounds like, never mind what it's for.

I just caught myself holding my cell phone up to my ear to see if there was a dialtone before I punched in the numbers... And I'm the one who hasn't had a landline phone since the late 90s.

Have you had the "I can't use my dial up internet and my ISP sent me to you" call yet? That just boggled my mind...why people on VoIP were trying to use dial up...

I go SO lucky with VoIP.

I was a temp for 6 months. Here, after you go perm, you get VoIP trained. Just as I was supposed to start VoIP training, a relative died, and I was out on leave for the training.

Since then, they've canceled 4 classes in 6 months, and have now decided that there will no longer be any VoIP training at this site.

I dodged it. WOOT!
