25,000 emails.

That's right - not a misprint.  25,000 emails.  Every single email since 2005.

The bad news - he finally hit his limit and couldn't do anything.
The worse news - he got hit with a trojan right around the same time.
The worser news - he couldn't understand why after the rebuild, it was taking so long to "reacquire" his mail.
Also, he was concerned because files on his local desktop (in violation of policy) weren't copied back to the local drive on the new build.

Did I mention a trojan at all?  I explained that to him, and most likely where it came from, and he's still pushing.

Time for the megaLART.

1. Reopen the ticket.
2. Add screenshot of desktop files (should have done this the first time, was trying to give the guy a break.  My fault).
3. Add emails from user indicating dissatisfaction with process, and my responses to him, copied to, well, everyone in the chain capable of reading at at 9th grade reading level.
4. Posterior firmly covered.

Don't screw with the admin, you know not what he'll do when pushed...

I have about 2,300,000 mails on one mail client (that I no longer use), plus about 30,000 in the new one (as the old one stopped being supported) which from about 3 months of use.

The wonders of being a high volume mail user, and having the same email address since 1998.

Of course, that's only to my primary address too. :D

WOW!

I was told by a sysadmin at my college that the top email user's mailbox was measured in gigabytes and he hadn't deleted anything, ever.

Just the other week - having to transfer a user's mailbox from one server to another because of stupid rules about alphabetical breakup.

*Initiates transfer, waits for completion*

*Several minutes roll by, mailbox is still transferring*

Hmm, this is taking a little longer than usual... better check the source mailbox.

EIGHTY THOUSAND EMAILS?

Multiple gigs in just the inbox is a common feature of management in large-ish organisations. At least, the ones I've worked in.

I should add - best policy I ever ran across at a government organisation was the built-in six week rule. If an email hadn't been opened or replied to in six weeks, it got deleted. Archiving was possible but steps had been taken to ensure it was not automatable at all - people had to manually select what they wanted kept.

Of course, this was the same place which kept all user home directories quota-limited to 30M, including their roaming profile data, until well into the early 2000s. Exception was by written business case only.

Pull a BOFH and grep his emails for certain choice terms.

Management, marketing departments, of most of all the graphics department, which is pretty well-trained on the graphical-arts-related computer applications, but can't be arsed to learn a little network security, the basic office apps, or how not to abuse email with absolutely massive losslessly-compressed-if-at-all graphics files.

I have 71,243 messages in my account. I rarely delete anything that isn't spam, and the messages are all sorted according to which mailing list they are from, which group of people from whom I may be receiving e-mail (family, work, etc), and so forth.
