To be fair, some older HP printers will use all the other colours if they just run out of black.

Looks like a funky mishmash, but it does print...

very fuckin' wasteful though. Like running a four colour printer on true four colour every time you print plain black text.

Again, I'm boggled why they didn't keep it...

It's not just older printers. Most of the cheap Lexmark ones do the same thing. I've seen several recently that only come with the color cartridge.

Yep... NEC was the same way. I had a SuperScript 150 which cost $20, shipped with a color cartridge, and replacement cartridges were $30 color, $45 black.

I wound up stealing its power supply board when it ran out of ink.

alot of the current hp aio still do it, much to some peoples annoyance that it wastes their colour ink
