Okay. If you're going to call up and act like you know more about technology than a mere peon like me? It would help to know the difference between an address bar and a search engine. Just sayin'. (Why yes, this was an AOL user. HOW DID YOU GUESS?)

One call I had today, this woman first complained that the phone (N95, natch) was too complicated for a 'grandmother like [me]', and then snapped at me when I asked her to open System and give me the details of her version of Windows.

Her: "I /know/ what Windows I have! It's Vista!"

Me: "Yeah, we need the exact version and edition."

Her: "I don't know that. How do I find out?"

Me: "You open System in Control Panel, like you just told me you'd done already."

In the end, I had to send her off to her PC manufacturer because she had no entries for bluetooth in her Device Manager. I know that she really does, but she was just too fucking incompetent to click the '+' next to 'Network Adapters'. All she could do was chant 'there's an entry that says NOKIA N95!' at me.

So she went randomly from claiming she knew nothing, to everything, to being totally fucking useless.

For some reason, the "I'm too old to have to know this crap" people get on my nerves the most. "I'm old and I'm not too good with computers, so use little words please," I'm fine with, but the "I'm too good/old/rich/whatever to learn new things, that's what you get paid for, peon" sets my teeth on edge. I usually inform them that hey, my grandfather was 80 when he got his first computer, and he was fine after some practice, so your 40-yo arse can shut it, kthx. Except more polite, obviously.

I do like it when I can fob them off on someone else solely because they're being stupid and/or stubborn and refuse to follow directions, though. Because it's not about technical knowledge, it's about following directions. "Push that button and read me what it says" level directions! Gah!
