[identity profile] sirxaph.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery

you are using a router to connect to the internet.
telling your isp that your PC is coming up with "cannot find server" error is totally unhelpful.
We do not support your router.
You bought it from PC world, and it's a belkin.. so ask PC world or belkin for help with it.
if you don't know what error your router itself reports or even if your router and computer are connected to each other then there isn't anything i can do.

I'm not even meant to be tech support.

Freakish. I think I know where that picture was taken for your LJ icon.

SoCal, probably Interstate 15, general vicinity of Bakersfield but out in the damn middle of nowhere in the desert? Been awhile since I've been out that way...

This is a pet peave of mine for cable and dsl providers.

As soon as they hear "I have a router" they reject the customer and tell them to call someone else.

90% of the time I get there, plug the computer directly into the modem, and they still don't have a connection.

So now instead of the customer talking to Verizon/Comcast/Whatever for free, they now have to pay me to call them.

I'm salaried. Doesn't matter how long I'm at the call, I make the same amount of money. Tac on that I'm not dealing with a customer who is upset (granted not at me) and it makes for a unpleasent time.

The DSL I work for has a huge list of routers they support. We can't really refer them to vendor because....uh...we sent it to them. I spend at least 3/4 of my day dicking around with modems that someone decided to try to "fix" by hitting the reset button. It's only if they bought it through someone other than us that we send them out.

That's entirely possible. Like I said, it's been years since I've been out that way...

WE ask that you power cycle modem, then router, and if that doesn't work try one computer directly into the modem.

The number of times the customer screams "Your connection isn't working" when it's their router isn't talking to us...

By the book, you're supposed to demand the customer do that before you drop the call.

By the book, you shouldn't have to explain to people how to unplug and plug in a "Fat Phone Cord".

Most Tech Agents throw the book out after the third concussion from the Head-Desk Manouver.

Kind of odd really...the times I've had to deal with the broadband provider here (currently I'm *not* using a router, but the place I was living at before, the landlord had sprung for routers and such to let all the tenants have broadband access--fortunately, the few times I needed it, I had complete access to the closet the gear was mounted in. :-) ), the response I got *wasn't* 'You have a router? Not our problem. *click*', it was 'We don't support routers/networked connections--if you can connect your computer straight to the modem, though, we'll see what we can do.' (granted, this has changed a bit, as the company now offers a home-network package as well). OTOH...if you're not 'supposed' to be doing tech support for the ISP you work at, why didn't you transfer them to tech support (who would have possibly done the above) instead?
Granted--we're only hearing one part of the story here (for all we know, sirxaph asked them to do the above and they refused, in which case I could quite agree with dropping their call, since you'd then have no way to know if it was an actual ISP problem or *just* a networking problem), but this sounds like poor handling of a customer. :-/

The pony massacre was my idea. And the ponies on me at least started with me putting one on my head. I'm not sure what happened after that.
