... and you ask them what the old computer's operating system is, because you want to get your USB key working to let the photos your father has clogged up the hard drive with...

... and your father calls it the "Windows 95" machine...

... don't just assume he's being pedantic and doesn't know the name of any other operating systems...

... and try not to cry when you realise there is no way in Hades you are going to get a driver for your USB 2.0 to work on the single USB port on the Windows 95 machine.

Yeeah. I feel your pain. That's why I don't support my parents' computer anymore, especially after they took the advice of a computer store employee who sold them a piece of crap PIII Compaq for $350 and convinced them it was better than anything I could build.

Yeah...try:

After my dad bought a Packard Bell 486 from a retail store in the "City", I stopped supporting the parents and family and just do full time building and maintaining of the families computers...

That's one of the many reasons I don't do house calls as a living...

My father has a Gateway running 98. Luckily, he's an old-school geek who understands "Sorry, your ancient hamster-driven haywagon won't run [$application]."

It's been a while since, you know, I've even SEEN a W95 machine, but I thought it didn't handle USB...

The question is: WHICH win95?

Win95 as released didn't support USB. OSR2.something added rudimentary USB support. Back then, IIRC, there was much bitching because you couldn't legally buy a stand-alone copy of Win95 OSR2. You needed an OEM license.

*Nods* The first one that you didn't need an OEM Licence for was Win98SE.

Even then, it was shoehorned in, and didn't work the majority of the time.

I got horror stories of Desktops using Win98SE with Wireless USB Dongles and really bad 3rd Party Wireless Networking Programs.

Thank goodness I'm out of that job. Too bad I wasn't there long enough to go, "HA! Unsupported! You suck!". :-(
