I've found that most users use the following terminology:

monitor = "computer"
computer = "hard drive"

Or when they think they are being technical they call the computer the CPU.

Yes, yes, the CPU.

I felt like I lost a part of myself the day I asked someone to turn off their hard drive, because they just weren't getting it. *sigh*

So it's not just where I work then! The number of times someone called up (past tense, I'm not on first line any more, thankfully) because the PC had frozen, I told them to turn it off and back on... three seconds later "Nope, still the same"...

i have this neat utility at work that allows me to see how many days a computer has been powered on. when a user calls in i'll scan the machine to see who's lying.

example:

me: could you shut down and reboot the computer?
user: i just did that this morning...

me: *looks at program and sees computer has been powered on for 34 days*
