Do you guys have a printer/copier like we do where you can scan a piece of paper and email it as a PDF attachment from the copier? I have such a love/hate relationship with that thing.

We have lots of them scattered all over the place. I love using them to scan rebate forms and government forms & such. It's much easier to keep them in a special .pst than to have paper shoved everywhere.

On the good side, we have so many that there are people on-site just to support them. (people /= us)

but damn.... "please enable scanning to pdf and emailing from the copier" is so much preferable to trying to tell us what your guess of the problem is...

The ones we have are Canon Imagerunners, and as long as you don't mind bashing a finger into the touchscreen, it works well enough.

I will cheerfully admit at least that a) I didn't set it up, and b) I'm not wholly in charge of supporting it. that falls on the network/server admins for the network connectivity, and we have a vendor to call for the printer/copier side of it.

The only 'real' issue we have with them is when they get blasted by the latest network jumper infection and we don't have the admin pwds for them... grrr...

LOL...I used to do software training/support for medical clinics. On some of our sites, we (their pathology lab) had a printer set up so that we could printer directly to it, without them having to do anything -- they just came in the morning and their pathology reports had printed overnight.

We had one guy on our payroll whose entire job was to call clients whose reports had gone, and ask them to either 1) turn the printer back on (and please leave it on, because y'know, your reports come through in the middle of the night after everyone's gone home to avoid interfering with anything else going on!), or 2) put paper in it.

One client, he had to call every single day for a month, because they would sit there and feed just enough paper for that day's reports into the printer. A. sheet. at. a. time.

I've worked at a place with a Ricoh one, kitted out with everything short of the Z-folder. They're wonderful things when they get going (and this model ran at 60ppm), but at the speeds they run any jams must be messy.

Fortunately those around here usually just use it for a page or two at a time.

Its biggest problem is that it seems to lose network connectivity whenever you make a face at it that it doesn't like.

One of the offices I support has an Imagerunner and even though I'm the network/server admin I agree with everything you've said. It's so easy to use that even the most clueless person in the office never has problems with it. The only funky thing about it is the drivers since they're for a much earlier model of IR, but that's small beans compared to knowing that I've never been called in for a "How do I do this" question; the clients just happily poke the touchscreen and everything works properly.

We're getting all-in-ones now... Scanner... copier... fax machine... We're getting them, but we don't fix them. We only care if it has power, no paper jams, and is on the network. Then we call someone else to fix it. These monsters are pains in the ass, but I want one in my area now... We have no need for it, but I want it anyway. It's the entire "OMG WE HAVE NEW* TECHNOLOGY!" response we get around here.

*: Our definition of "new" is anything more recent than NT4, sadly.

MORE frustrated? I walk away rather relaxed. Of course, the good food and drink help alot.
