Oh the Joy... First Vista ticket
Nov. 9th, 2006 12:08 pmOh, the joy.
Someone has apparenlty gone and installed either a beta or pirated version of Vista on their work computer. Now they are whining to me that they can't log into the domain. To top it off, they aren't even one of the ones that we get along with and are (less un)happy to help in odd situations.
God, but I need a strong whiskey & coke, a few full mags, and a Happy Place...
(and did I mention that this is my "Monday"?)

Date: 2006-11-09 05:17 pm (UTC)Walk in, sit down and do your job as normal.
But every stupid user who crosses your path...just call them a fudge-face and laugh for 15 minutes.
It works for me.

I love my job. ;)

Date: 2006-11-09 07:20 pm (UTC)Unless you're working in some sort of development environment where running Vista is integral to doing your job, this should result in a "job action". If there was a "damn good reason" for this, IT should have done this for him and set up an appropriate dual-boot environment or issued him another computer to do the necessary tasks under Vista and let him run his more mundane job functions under whatever OS the company normally uses.

Date: 2006-11-09 07:54 pm (UTC)Well, worst I could do to him here is pull the box and make him wait while I reimage it. It also turns out that he claims he is running XP, not Vista. I'll know shortly.

I return 1hr 30 later having uninstalled WMedia player beta and several other none company bits of software and heaps of spyware.
I list all the stuff I had to do on his PC, asked him not to do it again and emailed it to him and CC'd my manager and his ;-)

And remove the cables (and hardware) for the floppy drive, CD/DVD drive, and USB ports (and disable them in the BIOS and set a BIOS password). And shut off all internet access, or at least block downloads of executable or archive files. And install naziware which monitors the state of all of the above and if any of them 'mysteriously' become active, it informs you and tells the local switch to disable the user's network port.
And then you can start to *really* crack down.
