Oh, the joy.

Someone has apparenlty gone and installed either a beta or pirated version of Vista on their work computer. Now they are whining to me that they can't log into the domain. To top it off, they aren't even one of the ones that we get along with and are (less un)happy to help in odd situations.

God, but I need a strong whiskey & coke, a few full mags, and a Happy Place...

(and did I mention that  this is my "Monday"?)

"You installed an unauthorized OS on a computer that you need to do your work, and you want us to help you fix it. Ooookay. You realize this is exactly the same as if you had taken a pickaxe to the system case, and then whined to us because you can't do your job, right? Let me talk to your supervisor.

"Hello, Supervisor? Send that person home for the rest of the week; they're too stupid to work here. Thanks."

oh, how I feel your pain. I get that at least 20x a week from our Lusers.

"I have Vista. Can you assure me that your software will work properly on it?"

/sigh

The the large part, our users know better. And the machines that are in shared areas are generally locked away with only the supervisor having the key, AND there's no CD drive in it. ::cackle::

Just get totally baked before work.
Walk in, sit down and do your job as normal.

But every stupid user who crosses your path...just call them a fudge-face and laugh for 15 minutes.

It works for me.

Our response:

"Windows Vista is currently listed as Beta software and has not been released for general distribution. As such, per our Terms of Service, we do not support connectivity problems with Beta software. Further, as your problem is stemming from a MicroSoft product, you would need to contact their technical support department for help resolving an error with their product as our Terms of Service do not allow us to provide support for something that is not our product. Thank you for calling."

I love my job. ;)

Users are allowed to pick and choose their OS at your company? That's pretty damn scary dude.

We've had a few IE 7 calls. We don't even go there. Not scheduled to roll it out until Sept 2007 and that's if everything seems to be going ok. I love reminding users that the computers are not. Their. Machines!

Oh yeah, today's my Friday. Heading up to the mountains for 5 days. Got a bottle of Glen Fiddich, 150 rounds .45 and a bunch of beef jerky. Set!

+1.

Unless you're working in some sort of development environment where running Vista is integral to doing your job, this should result in a "job action". If there was a "damn good reason" for this, IT should have done this for him and set up an appropriate dual-boot environment or issued him another computer to do the necessary tasks under Vista and let him run his more mundane job functions under whatever OS the company normally uses.

3 boxes of .45 is plenty for backpacking. That stuff's heavy. I like to keep my total pack weight under 30 lbs and my Kimber 1911 doesn't make that easy. I'm just heading up into the mountains outside of Abq. Nice having such a place a mile from the house.

Then he will be lucky if he's allowed to keep his job. Especially if it turns out to be a pirated copy on company equipment. I do NOC work for a non defense related gov't contract, and currently installing VISTA and/or IE 7.0 are Termination offenses.

Yeah, one of the few perks of working government, if you do something wrong and causes them to spend more money than they planned to fix it, you are out the door.

Argh. I'm not touching Vista on my *home* machine, let alone trying to stick it on a work computer.
Beta software's nothing but trouble.

Fo0Ktards abound at work !!

I know the pain, Vodka is my pain killer.

A couple of weeks ago a luser emails me CC'd to my manager, says how WMedia player is imperative to his job. It needs to be fixed ASAP.

I return 1hr 30 later having uninstalled WMedia player beta and several other none company bits of software and heaps of spyware.

I list all the stuff I had to do on his PC, asked him not to do it again and emailed it to him and CC'd my manager and his ;-)

He who laughs last ......

Because ie 7.0 has a lot of bugs in it that MS is calling features. It's screwy when dealing with remote access issues. Currently the governement people said at least 8 months and/or the 1st service pack before they'd be willing to even consider testing in our environment.

worst I could do to him here is pull the box

...when he goes out for lunch. And remove the cables (and hardware) for the floppy drive, CD/DVD drive, and USB ports (and disable them in the BIOS and set a BIOS password). And shut off all internet access, or at least block downloads of executable or archive files. And install naziware which monitors the state of all of the above and if any of them 'mysteriously' become active, it informs you and tells the local switch to disable the user's network port.

And then you can start to *really* crack down.

not even, she went to france to study abroad and her boyfriend convinced her it was a good idea... she didn't even know how to scan for viruses! When we were waving our hands telling her we didn't have the tools to help since we've never seen Vista, she said, "But XP used to be on here, can't you just use the tools for that?"
