In an odder twist, I found out that not only did she mistake "modem" for "monitor", she mistook that mistake for something else entirely. It's a mistake within a mistake, which, after pondering for too long, made my head hurt.

As I implied earlier, they seemingly requested a "flat-screen modem" for an intern. The workstation's computer was not working (hard drive error), so after a computer switch, all is well. It turns out that's what the request was about.

I'm amazed at the new watermark of stupidity.

Well you see, the thing that everything is connected to, is the modem (obiviously) and since it was broken they need a new one. And it connects to a flat screen, so logically she needs a new "flat-screen modem." Understanding dumb is a strange skill, sometimes its even easier to be ignorant.
