no wanna be here..
dun wanna talk to stupid people on the phone today!
-.-
Cust: I'm a network engineer, and I'm calling to
report your mail servers are broke!
me: *does a quick ping and series of authentication
tests to check the servers JIC* Alright sir, What were
the results of your ping tests?
Cust: Uhm.. I didn't know the IPs and.. *more
sheepishly* I didn't ping their DNS names..
me: I see, sir.. If I may, I am guessing we're using
a home network here with a routing system of some
sort, using NAT or simular.. What are the MTU set at?
It may be causeing a packet storm if the setting it to
large to pass through the filtration servers.. Or are
we using an internal DNS server setup? If so, we may
be haveing a propogation error of some sort. Do we
have any form of log files that speak of where this
could have happen?
Cust: Uhm... *sounding almost frightened now* I..
don't know...
come to find out, he had a linksys router with MTU
disabled.. Enabled it, set it at 1492, and the system
purred like a kitten..
*sigh* stupid people who think they're smart annoy
me...

Real network engineer: "I'm having a bit of trouble getting to the mail server from here. Pings to
<IP>don't return. The traceroute dies at<IP>. Is the problem at your end?"Really good network engineer: Nothing, because he/she fixes it by themselves!
