Here's an email that went straight into my "Darwin" file:

Hello, I forget what it was I attempted to download from you, but I do remember that it was not compatible with my OS of choice WIN98.

All files deleted.

I do think that as WIN98 is the last Microsoft OS that gave access to true DOS, and that it is the least controlling, and still used by millions, that you and simliar companies are making a mistake not writing for it. But that's just my, and those millions, of course, opinion.

Oh, of course! Win98 is the future...if the future was 8 years ago.

You could at least write your software so it's compatible with TRUE DOS.

My husband, a computer tech and network engineer, has the same peeve over recent Windows releases. Of course, we're not stuck in the past about it....

::rolls eyes::

WHile I love win98 (98se was probably the best version of that kernel, IMHO) getting things like firewire, USB 2.0 and several other goodies to work reliably on it is... painful.

98se is good only for legacy and abandoned games that refuse to run on the NT kernel.

Yeah, it's not like the fact it's essentially DOS based isn't the MAJOR issue with 98 et al. At least XP/2000 get a real kernel, even if the implementation is a bit wonky.

98 is also EOL. Thank fucking god for that. While 98SE was the best of the series, that's damning it with faint praise.

I demand - DEMAND!!! That you write your software to support the 8-bit Atari OS. STAT!!!

Running it in a virtual session seems to do everything I need it to do, which is about what you said. Course, it's been a while since I've wanted to play them. I suspect that it will be more desirable with Vista.

Hmm. It's True DOS you want?

*insert link to Linux flavor of choice*

Yeah, Linux has the truest DOS of all, is least controlling of your computer, used by millions, and companies are making a mistake by not writing for it. This is of course my, and those millions, of course, opinion :).

It'd be interesting to get figures of what OSes the world is currently running, strip out all the NT/XP ones and anything with fewer numbers than Win98 (leaving it at the bottom), and then mail said list back to the user. Say it's your development plan.

And I should add -

I forget what it was I attempted to download from you, but I do remember that it was not compatible with my OS of choice WIN98.

What are the chances they they downloaded something specifically labelled as a non-Win98 build? "PalmOS version", "Alpha64 version", "Sparc version", "MacOS version".

Or that they downloaded something from a completely different company?

Or that they downloaded a Win98 version but clicked "Cancel" in the installer?

You MIGHT want to inform this person that Microsoft also considers it dead and wants you to stop bugging them about it.

Someone might want to inform them that most software released in the last 4 years isn't designed to work with Win98.
I run 98 in a VMWare virtual machine. Would never consider going back to it as an actual production OS.

Did you break it to this tool that not even microsoft supports that OS anymore? And they wrote it?

the question is... ESX or GSX?

IMO there is only 1 real VM solution.

Right now, just VMWare Workstation on my main machine. I use it for troubleshooting old OSes, evaluating new ones (Vista...) and yes, running old games that don't like XP ;)

This sounds like the fucking asstards who loved DOS because using it was being "closer to the hardware". WTF is that supposed to mean? Guess what dipshit, you aren't. Neither are you linux command line nazis. You're all using a shell of one kind or another, whether it's graphical or not. What difference does it make, in terms of getting what you want/need done, if you type in "unzip somefile.zip" or go through a series of menus? Same friggin' thing happens.

I'm not saying it's worthless to know how to use a command line. But don't act like it somehow makes you cooler or the work better. All that does is make you a smug asshole.
