I'm sorry

I got this email this morning:

I just wanted to let you know that I've transferred some of the associated logs from the Fru process that had issues with the TMS installation and adding fp13 as a fru and upgrade. The messages logs for the TMS from the cos_setup -ff -v 13 are in the TMS directory....

The path to these logs are:

/packages/dcinema.devdist/service_curr_eng/TTown_TMS_install_logs

So I looked in that directory, and instead of finding the log files produced by our FRU (Field Replacement Unit) process, I find the last 5 days of /var/log/messages. Great. And of course no explanation of what "issues" they had.

Too bad I left my fucking mind reading device in my other fucking pants.

Follow-up email from the read-my-mind guy:

Regarding the upgrade that had issues on screen 9, if you look in the screen 9 directory path, you should see both the messages logs from that screen that may have some OS level complaints about something the upgrade script was trying to do but couldn't AND you should see the upgrade.log file from Screen 9, the one that had the issues.

Of course it's too much fucking trouble for him to tell me which of the 12,000 lines of messages.log was the "OS level complaints about something the upgrade script was trying to do". Or even an approximate sequence of events. And my boss sent me an email bitching me out about the tone of my emails to him, in spite of the fact that I'd edited out most of what I really wanted to say before I sent it.

More fun linkage to brighten your day a little. This particular screed is resonating with me as not one, but TWO of the fuckers have stopped by my desk to "see how it's going" and slap arbitrary dates on the work I'm doing.

Why is it so hard to upgrade a version of a tool in place, instead of making little copies all over the place with soft links to them?
I'm upgrading this image gallery called 'coppermine' and I've just started, and there are no fewer than THREE previous versions in the directory, just sitting around littering up the place. Now, the reason for the upgrade is that there is a security hole in one of the earlier versions, so maybe, just maybe, we should at least GET IT OUT OF THE WEB PATH so that it can't be cracked that easily.

Just sayin'.

I was digging through old boxes from close to 10 years ago and ran across some documentation on a former customer. Customer's name is/was Pat Mougey. Go ahead, search for her name on google. Yes it is the same Pat that shows up about Parapsychology and in a few mind control groups. The problem I helped resolve was the printing issue she had back in 1996. I am honestly surprised to not see anything anywhere referencing the internet company I worked for at the time. Seeing these printout jogged memories about former insane customers. I'm curious if anyone can top this one.

From the fucking HEAD OF HUMAN RESOURCES:

Thank you for the PC Inventory list for the HR group. I made some changes/updates to it and provided information you reported that is different from our set up down here.

In addition, when Jxxx deployed Dxxxx Wxxxx’s flat screen monitor a couple weeks ago, her old black monitor was to go to Fxxxxx Wxxxxx as her flat screen was deployed elsewhere within our group. At the present, we do not know where it went but need it moved to Fxxxxx so she may have a monitor that matches her keyboard. While this might seem trivial to some, these small things are what keep our group going strong during these trying times. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Words fail me.

Well a couple weeks ago, I mentioned a really nasty voicemail I got about 3 years ago. I found it buried on my file server, so I thought I'd post it.

here it is ..[2.4mb mp3, NSFW language towards the end]

Just for the record, I work for a software firm, but we don't have a spreadsheet (I inserted some sounds to block out the name of the product but if I recall, it was some free spreadsheet like Staroffice or something to that effect. Further, we are not an American owned company. My boss is actually European and we are a subsidiary of a company based in a former Soviet republic.

At any rate, we never heard from this idiot again and we're obviously still in business. :)
